I did this hike on July 13 2022. I started much later than I would have liked because I actually planned to hike hidden Lake way over near Marblemount, but I couldn't get my car up the road. Started this hike at about 8:30am and was surprised to find not that many people on the trail. We couldn't do the loop because there was just too much snow covering the pass. We were only the second people to scale up the snow covered ridge to get to the amazing views at the top because we were following the salomon shoe tracks of a guy we saw off in the distance. There was a really dangerous snow bridge over some rock and running water where we had to get off the snow and scale some rocks (we almost turned around here). Once at the top the views were mind blowing! Absolutely worth it! We had the top to ourselves for a little while before others were able to follow our more obvious tracks through the snow, it didn't matter because everyone who came up was just as stoked with the views as we were and super friendly. We slid down on the snow on our butts some of the way down and had a great time. A day to be remembered...
Read moreAmazing trail! Views are insane and really well marked. In total took us 4h20, including some photo breaks and time at the top for lunch. Very glad we did the counterclockwise route - the ascent is very gradual, compared to the steep ascent if you go clockwise. Took us 2h15 to get to the official Maple Pass point (about 3.4miles), and another 1h40 to come back down (about 3.8 miles). TAKE MOSQUITO SPRAY - loads of mosquitos straight from the parking all the way up to Maple Point itself! There was barely anyone on the route today (Thursday 11th July). Snow - almost all snow has melted now. There were around 5 patches of snow covering the trail in total, and each one about 5m long and perfectly navegable without trekking poles. Take plenty of water, there is no water or restrooms on the route and we were sweating like crazy! Parking was already pretty full by 08:15 on a Thursday… so get there early or park on the road. Cars struggling for spaces at 13:45. (Pay $5, or have your National Parks pass on your dashboard). Recommend starting the hike early to avoid the ascent in the...
Read moreThis is a fantastic hike that shows off the best that the Pacific Northwest has on offer. Alpine meadows, alpine lakes, distant waterfalls, dramatic peaks, a snowy mountain range in the distance, and wonderful little wildflowers.
It took us about 4 hours to make the loop. Plenty of places to pull over for a snack or for a photo. Just be mindful of the Heather plants that seem to be stressed under human traffic.
Hike starts right behind the signboard in the parking lot and will take you counterclockwise around the loop. I recommend this way for the immediately rewarding scenery and gradual incline. If a very hot day, you may want to go clockwise to do most of the uphill in the woods on switchbacks. Take the Rainy Lake trail to get to the clockwise trailhead.
The trail is well marked. Only uncertain fork was at a sign pointing to Lake Ann. Take the unmarked turn to the right to...
