Went for the first time on Father's Day, 2023. Both grandsons seemed to enjoy everything. My 2.5 y/o loved getting his hands on the real railroad tools in the exhibit room. Wrenches, spikes, rails. etc. He's only got plastic tools at home but loves to play "fix it".
The gift shop is jammed full of cool stuff, but cramped; so, get there before your train leaves, or while a run has gone out. They're mobbed after a train arrives back at the station.
The model train experience was a big hit, too. But I would have liked to have seen more than one train running. There's plenty of room for a freight and a passenger train to run at the same time. It's DCC controlled, so no blocking worries. It's a lot of dead time when you're at the wrong end. (I have an HO layout at home (8'x4') that can run 3 trains at once. My grandsons love to watch it and touch).
Our 11:15 train journey was made excellent by docent, Brandon, who explained everything beautifully. Every one of the volunteers is in perfect "character", extremely knowledgeable and looks out for everyone's safety and well-being.
Of course, we visited the interior of the caboose, as well. I would have liked to have visited more cars and engines, but the kids got tired, and my daughter got tired, as well. But that simply means I've got to go back...and...
Read moreThe Oklahoma Railway Museum was a fun and insightful experience. I have two teenaged boys that I wasn’t sure how they would react to visiting here but nearly as soon as we were out of the car they were all over the exhibits. There is something about trains that sparks curiosity in people of all ages, in turn igniting interest in those giant beast of a machine that will never fade. While here (Aug. 23, 2025) we only saw one staffer during our visit and while we didn’t directly interact with her, we did overhear a conversation between her and another visitor who really only had a question about a new feature that is soon to be offered and the staffer was very pleasant and accommodating and answered the question confidently. The museum isn’t packed with visitors so you’re able to take your time without feeling rushed or crowded out. It’s a living exhibit and it seems they are periodically able to add more pieces but those pieces have to be restored often time to a quality worthy of display so please consider donating something even if if admission is free to help keep this museum open for future...
Read moreWhile on a business trip to Oklahoma myself and a co-worker had some spare time and wanted to see something interesting. We found the museum, and thought we give it a shot!
So glad we did! When arrived, the museum admin greeted us at the entrance. She told us about the history of the place, the trains and what there is to see. The lady was so passionate about the museum, which is great!
We had a look around all the train carriages. It was a Thursday so no trains were running, but that was OK with me! The whole museum was very well layed out. There's a lot of cool equipment around to see. The restored station house from Oakwood, Oklahoma is in brilliant condition and houses the museum shop.
Some of the trains and coaches are open, some are closed. It's a really nice place to visit, and something there for every generation. If I'd live a bit closer I'd volunteer!
Would go again and recommend to everyone!
Set aside a couple of hours if the trains are not...
