I tried to hike this lake from Alta and was disappointed to find out that the road is close until about July 1st. I headed up a few days later and started from Brighton and was so pleased with starting there. There are 5 lakes up here you can do from Brighton and you can hit all 5, or just do a few. The first is Dogwood lake and it is very close to the beginning of the trail head. Many people do a long hike up to this lake and then get bummed that it is so close to the Brighton ski resort. The next lake is Lake Mary. This was my favorite lake. I think I would have been just as happy to just hang out at this lake for it was amazing from every side. Then is Lake Martha. It is a small lake and you don't get too close to it. Then is lake Catherine. In my head I had hoped Catherine would be my favorite, but even though it was pretty it was not as amazing as Mary. If you come in from Alta, you come in at Catherine on the west side, and the hike from Brighton comes in to the east side. Here it was fun to watch the teenagers that were sliding down the remaining snow on the south side of the lake. On the way down, we turned left right after passing the dam. I really loved doing this for I got to enjoy the gorgeous views from the north side of the lake, we hiked by some beautiful cliffs, and ended up at twin lakes and then back down the ski lifts to Brighton. Gorgeous day that you can make it a short hike or a long hike....whatever you choose, but all them will be beautiful. #letsguide...
Read moreLake Mary is absolutley beautiful, set in a picturesque backdrop of white and grey granite peaks. This is a fantastic hike and is not very long, though it is steep, and is easy enough for families. The water draws down through the year so depending on what time of year you visit, the lake can look totally different. You can camp around the lake which makes it a potential quick overnighter. The fishing varies significantly and at times can be good but at others can be challenging. There is no swimming in the lake because its watershed nature, although that rarely stops adventurous cliff jumpers. I give it 4 stars just because it is a very very popular spot. Don't go if you want to be alone unless you are willing to go when...
Read moreto Lake Mary has to be one of my favorite hikes in the SL area. I have done it twice this year with others whom were pregnant or not in the “Utah” shape and it took us 30-45 mins up and 20 ish down. I recommend giving yourself 2 hours so you can spend time around the lake.
Relatively easy and amazing views pretty much the whole way. Wildflowers are beautiful on the way up. Maybe a week or so from being in full bloom.
If you are up for an extra hour or so hike, continue on to lake Catherine and back. At the very least, hike up an extra 10-20 minutes to some of the views of lake...
