Chaos. Every time I play here I have NO idea where the pin is ,much less the tee pad. This place is a mess. My guess is they have a bunch of ,"locals" who couldn't care less about people who don't play this course every week and demand changes to the layout. I believe in inclusion. Unfortunately the people who set up the holes and maintain this park are really over worked or just lazy. The rains in L.a. this summer, make the overgrowth extreme. The weeds and brush are so extreme, one can see where their disc flew and still not find it. Then there's the multiple tee pads for each hole, the extra holes ( this course has way more than 18) which would only be ok if they actually maintained the 1st 18 holes. To put more than 18 holes when the staff who upkeep this course are obviously in way over their heads with the basic 18 ,seems ridiculous. I spend half my time on this course just looking for tee pads and pins. DEFINITELY not the way it should be. I know... there's an app. Last time I played Oak Grove my disc golf app was malfunctioning and I had to play it ,"old school" which meant searching for holes that were covered with black plastic bags(#6) or just not there at all(#7) and I find it ridiculous and disrespectful for those who are not, "locals". I never thought I would ever deal with ,"localism" on a disc golf course. It's at every beach in SoCal but a disc golf course?? Kind of ridiculous. They claim to be the 1st disc golf course(untrue, De la Veaga was 1st but without baskets 🙄) so.... I would really like to give the benefit of the doubt for the constant mistakes, errors in directions and lack of any arrows on the 1st half of the course with a general indication of the direction of the next tee pad. This place is chaos. Pretty park. Terribly...
Read moreI am not an avid disc golfer - this was my first time playing in years, and I only own a few discs. There seemed to be lots of pros here with overflowing kit bags. It was cool to be playing at the very first permanent disc golf course. Having said that, it was a little bit of a challenge. The sign marking the first hole had been pulled out and tossed aside. Navigating the course in general was a little tricky, and I would have been lost without an app on my phone to direct me. I almost lost a disc several, and I actually found two discs that were lost by others. I learned that it's a good idea to put your name and phone number on your discs. I ran into lots of folks who knew the course well and were very helpful. I ended up needing to leave and came back to finish on another day. I was surprised after the 18th hole to find out that there were still four more. Anyway, I'm glad I played, and I'll...
Read moreIt's always a special day when I play a round of disc golf at the course where the game was born. Oak Grove disc golf course nestled in the San Gabriel mountain foothills next to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge. This is where I learned how to play the game and it's always like coming home.
Today, January 14th 2022, I'm adding a new photo of me, Dan "Stork" Roddick (left) and his friend Tracy (right). I had the pleasure of playing with them both last weekend and it was an epic round!!! For those who care about these things, Stork is PDGA #3. He literally is one of the founding fathers of disc golf. It was my distinct pleasure playing with them both and I'm looking forward to another round soon. Only next time no more trash...
