I've been meaning to do this hike for over a year and I'm glad I finally did! It's a lot easier than I'd expected due to the many switchbacks. I got there a little after sunrise and there were few people there so I got to see and hear the various packs of coyotes yipping to each other along the canyon, which was eerie but very cool. Keep your dogs on leash, especially the tasty little ones. But don't be afraid to bring them; I saw lots of people with dogs coming up the trail as I headed back down. There are great views of nearly all of Phoenix at the top and also there are tiny...

Holbert and Dobbin trails were my first hikes on the South Mountain reserve. It is moderate-highly trafficked hike located close to Downtown providing a different view than out-back trails. Trail is rocky, I enjoyed it. Had proper signs all thru, as such there is no summit other than the Dobbins point. Looks like a frequent day out spot for many locallites, I would try one more time combining with other trails near by. View at the top give a glance at the airport and downtown, not the usual scenic view. Give it a try, I would consider this hard for the rocky...

Trail is beginner to moderate but it is very Rocky. What we refer to as an ankle breaker Trail. At the top there is a parking lot and an overlook point. So you can hike up from the bottom or drive up from the bottom. There are supposed to be petroglyphs along the way but to be honest the trail is so Rocky that you spend all of your time looking down trying to avoid breaking your ankle while walking so you cannot focus on the possible petroglyphs as you climb the mountain. Wasn't bad but probably would not revisit...
