This is one of two Pikeville City owned parks and by far the largest and more fitness oriented. To begin with you can park at the bottom of the mountain and walk 2 miles to the Overlook at an average of an 8% grade that levels out about halfway up and levels out for 75% of the upper half. No matter your fitness level this is a moderate cardio workout. On the first half you'll pass two dog parks, one for dogs 30 lbs and under according to the sign, the other for dogs 30 lbs and over. Next you'll come to a kayak and zip line station. For $25 they will take you a couple of miles up the river and after a 2-hour ride pick you up and bring you back to your car. Then you'll pass some really nice soccer fields, an RV park and the YMCA with a modern weight room At the halfway point there is a track and field sized walking track with a modern rubber base, some calisthenic equipment, 6 soccer courts and a 1-mile hiking loop that goes into the woods. There is a public restroom vending machines and a drinking fountain as well as a Community center, baseball field and a showhorse competition ring. The second-half has picnic shelters, a playground and a horse riding stable that includes several miles of trails along the mountain top. There is a nice hiking trail up in this area also. Currently under construction at the top is a new multi-use conference that overlooks the famous Pikeville cut through and the historic town of Pikeville. It's quite a view with an elevation change of approximately 600 feet. For a small City this is a...
Read moreIt's a good place to go to see a nice view of Pikeville from a roughly 400 foot bluff. The lookout is partially fenced but parents should keep a close eye on their kids as the view was created by taking away a big chunk of the mountain and it is a solid rock cliff that is dangerous if one would fall off. It's a series of stepped ledges that ends at a railroad track that then drops into the river. It's steep enough that you can't see the river below. The park does have horseback riding and some hiking available. We walked a fairly level, paved path that was mostly shaded mid-day. The trails display some of the geology of these hills, including a vein of coal and sandstone/limestone. The road leading up to the lookout is narrow and doesn't have guardrails so go slow. There is also a campground in the park that you can reserve electronically (no in person registration...
Read moreThis is a safe, secure, pet-friendly, quiet, clean & convenient RV Park with a nice playground for visiting grandchildren. BBQ grills, water, electrical & dump facilities are available at each spacious, concrete-pad site. No open (bonfire) burning is permitted, and there was an empty beverage vending machine near the playground / bath-house / pavilion area, which was a little disappointing. A pool / splash-pad feature would complement this facility. Overall, it was a pleasant 3-day, 4-night experience for us, close to our son & his family....
