Lovely place to camp and be with nature.
We have been here twice this year. Earlier in April, we drove all the way from Los Angeles in a camper van. That was a fun trip. Although it rained a lot then. The campground was lush, with lots of towering redwoods and Gualala river was gushing into the Pacific. People here are very nice, especially the ranger is a super nice person. He helped us with some quarters needed for the shower room (has hot water). Second time we visited this place but stayed with our friends in Anchor Bay (4 miles drive north of the campground).
There are a couple of routes to get to the ocean. One is a hike along the river but the ranger advised us not to take that one when it rains as the land can become very slushy over that route. The other route is to hike from the west side of the highway and walk towards the ocean. On that side you can't park inside the park if you are not a member but you can still park outside and walk in. The ocean view is beautiful.
If you plan to come around summer then please be cautious of ticks when moving through tall grass.
If you ever need any supplies then Gualala town is about a mile away to your north and there are some lovely shops over there.
Love this place. Would...
Read moreI went camping here with my dad for 2 nights and it was wonderful. We reserved plot F of the Walk in campsites and it was wonderful. The spot itself was simply gorgeous, and it was far enough away from other campsites that we couldn't see them. There was plenty of room to set up our tents and the food box was for sure raccoon proof. (They tried valiantly) The host was very nice and the firewood was a good price. The bathrooms are somewhat of a walk, but that wasn't a problem for us. The only slight downside is that you can hear the highway from the campsite, but it wasn't too loud, and it dies down after dark and it didn't bother us much. It also felt very safe. My dad went into town for a few hours both days so he could call his work and I was alone at the campsite, I didn't once feel like I was in danger. The entire place is just a calm little getaway that gives you a lovely sense of the woods. I...
Read moreLoved it. Had a great time with my family. While we were there a pod of whales was playing 100 ft from the shore. It was AMAZING!!!. along with the whales we were able to watch and see pelicans dive and catch fish. My 5 year old was elated. However on the walk back along the beach we noticed a shell of a dead Sea lion and next to it a dead pelican... I understand letting things go back to nature they way they should but my 2 year old wanted to touch and well.... lets me honest...I told him not a chance. And it was a battle getting him to walk away from it. So hopefully they have the carcass removed soon so no other little ones get their curiosity spiked. We had a great trip there and we are planning to come back again in a few weeks. Maybe the whales will...
