First off, when we first visited this park we expected a sandy beach because of the name “The Sands”. If we knew that it was not a sandy beach our expectations would have been different. Notice we gave it a five because of its unique location and the possibility of finding shark teeth.
So with that said, if you like a rustic beach with shells instead of sand, a boardwalk with ocean breezes, and vast vistas of the Port Royal and beyond this is a five star! And this hike is for you. Again, you won’t find much sand on this beach, no, a much more interesting find if you’re lucky. If you haven’t been here research how to find shark teeth in this area and what they look like. This beach is known to have shark teeth and the locals seem to know how to find them.
Note: Using a sifter and hand shovel instead of a full size shovel is best as digging holes during your search poses a danger to the surrounding wildlife (Sea Turtles), beach goers, and first responders.
Update: after many visits to this area, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of covering up any holes that your dogs dig or that you dig in order to find shark teeth. As a potential sea turtle nesting, ground and a great beach for walking holes pose,...
Read morePretty nice beach without many people. Yes, beware of craters in the parking area. Found a few fossilized shark teeth on the beach along with some skate teeth, but not many. So they are there if you look hard enough. You may want to wear your water shoes because there are many live and empty oyster shells. And don't feed the seagulls until you are leaving because they will plague you! We saw other people feed them and they never left them alone. I threw popcorn out the car window for them in the parking lot when we were leaving and they followed the car for a while. Oh, and of you have a chance, stop in the charming small town stores on the way through. I know they'd appreciate it. We did, and got some really...
Read moreThis is more an access point to the water than an actual beach. It was recommended by the Airbnb folks I rented from. I went with friends and small children and it was not exactly family friendly. There is sand and beautiful views, but the water is brown due to mud and such from the marsh. The shore is barely there and riddled with oyster shells making is pretty difficult to enter the water. If you're seeking an excursion that doesn't include jumping over waves and building sandcastles then this may work for you. But for a more conventional beach day, I recommend taking the extra trek to the far end of the island to get a true...
