I have been enjoying my visits to the vast and beautiful Mt. Tabor park with friends, family, my dogs and by my lonesome for 7 years now. I was 11 when I first attended this park and I am 18 now. It has consistently provided me with lush greenery, miles of paths to explore (including stable bike paths), great views, and friendly people.
Due to the large area of the park there is so much to do: you can visit multiple play structures, sit at picnic tables with options for overhead cover or no cover, sit under lush greenery on soft grass, pavement or on benches placed at different viewpoints, stroll paved and soft paths, play basketball at their court, play music on the amphitheater stage, or take your dogs to the large fenced dog park equipped with a water bowl, always functioning water pump, and a trash can.
Growing up with this park a mile away from my house has been a privilege I hold incredibly dear. It’s located near many (4 that I know of) different bus lines making it very easily accessible for those under 16 or without a license. There are many street lamps throughout the paved pathways and roads leading through the park. Though there aren’t as many on unpaved trails, that’s to be expected. These street lamps are still widespread enough to have provided a great sense of security to myself, my fellow young feminine presenting friends, and my parents who allowed me to spend many evenings there. The lights and semi-high foot traffic in the park have provided me the security I need in order to stay out past dark, more so than that of other parks.
My one complaint surrounding the park is the fact that there are only 2 public restrooms. One of which resides at the very top of the mountain, the other on the far northern end, and both can be locked during times of need. As someone who does not have a high bandwidth for holding in urine, I have had to rush there many-a-time and it can be a perilous journey. I understand the upkeep required for public restrooms is very high, and the plumbing situation on the mountain is already wavering in stability. It’s not something that I necessarily hold disdain for, but it is something worth mentioning and something one may want to plan their trip around.
Overall, I would and do frequently recommend a trip to Mt. Tabor park for anyone in the area. Whether visiting, or residing in Portland, it’s a clean spot that offers so much beauty and activity, making it worthy of the journey...
