Read moreGood, not great. I give the stars because it's not bad but it's not outstanding in it's open right and there is a better offering near by. First of all, although there museum said it's the Newport car museum, it's actually two towns away in Portsmouth. Thee building is very nice, parking is easy and plentiful. The staff are friendly and welcoming.
The good is the museum is very clean and well light. You can get very close to the cars and walk all around most of them. The collection of mustangs and Corvettes is especially strong. There are also some outstanding highlights in the collection, such as a Porsche 918 Spyder, an 1886 Benz, a Ford gt40, and split window mid-year Corvette. The collection is worth seeing, no question.
The negatives of this museum concern it's collection. The collection has a few less than 80 cars, so everything is on display. This is bad because you really never have to go back. But it also shows huge holes in the collection. Apart from the early Benz I don't believe they have any other cars from before 1950, no golden age vehicles whatsoever, that a huge problem because they're essentially missing half timeline of cars. This poverty continues thematically.
There a few one off interesting pieces, such as a Kaiser, but overall the collection is missing representation from some major players. There are no Ferraris, Aston Martins, Bugatti, Audi, VW (such as a bug or carmengia) Audi, and Volvo. There are several well known but defunct brands that aren't present, like Peirce-Arrow, Studebaker, or delorean. One could quibble about taste, but that's the big problem, with a couple exceptions the collection is neither wide not deep. It has a smattering of cars with really no particular unifying theme.
If you're in the area and it's a rainy day, check it out, but it's not worth going out of your way for, and once you've been there you really never...
Read moreA private collection of cars that span the ages of time from the very 1st vehicle invented to the present day. This is a huge collection of motor cars in at least 6-8 large rooms with information, wonderful historical stories, short video clips and photos of famous people who either owned them back in the day or driven them. Vintage cars, race cars, advanced technological cars, muscle cars, etc. Cars owned or driven by famous movie stars, singers, and inventors. Back stories will astound and delight the viewer. Large wall photos throughout the museum. There is a fantastic shop of memorabilia, books, t-shirts, board games, toys model car kits...and so much more to choose from, all reasonably priced. In short, it is something for everyone to see and enjoy. There is an amazing Lego wall display as you enter the shop. Bathrooms are clean, like being in Disneyland. A wonderful way to remember a time when we drove a car similar to what is on display. It is truly a visionary delight and not to be missed. Self tour or inquire about a guided tour. Ample parking. Handicap accessible. You can spend a couple of hours enjoying the magnificent displays of these outstanding cars. There is a surprise for the little ones who just might recognize the iconic car that they drove at 2 years old. Not to be missed. Fantastic to visit on a cloudy day or any day. Come see this amazing museum just a short 15 minutes from Newport Fisherman's Warf. A truly memorable experience for us adults as well as...
