⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely stunning — our favorite beach in Puerto Rico!
We visited Mar Chiquita Beach in Tierras Nuevas Poniente, Manatí to celebrate Kim’s birthday, and it was absolutely perfect. The drive from our VRBO in the Carolina area took about 45 minutes and was completely worth it. The winding road and the view as we crested the last hill down toward the beach were breathtaking.
Parking is free (though sandy), and even on a Tuesday in the off-season, a few food trucks were open. We brought our own food and drinks and immediately wished we’d brought snorkel gear — the moment we saw the crystal-clear water inside the seashell-shaped bay, we knew it was a snorkeler’s paradise. The bay is surrounded by towering, jagged reef cliffs, creating a sheltered, magical lagoon.
We found a shaded spot on the far side where we could easily access the water but still enjoy both sun and shade. The water was refreshingly cool, not too warm, and the waves were big but gentle. Inside the reef, we spotted lots of colorful fish, sea urchins, and chitons, plus crabs and anoles along the rocks. We even watched a hawk swoop down to catch a fish — a total National Geographic moment!
My drone footage from here was incredible — the turquoise water against the golden cliffs is unreal. Even as the day got busier, we never felt crowded. One couple’s barking dog broke the peace for a bit, but they didn’t stay long. Unfortunately, we did notice some litter despite plenty of trash bins, which is disappointing.
Before we left, we explored the cool caves near the exit — a must-see if you visit! We even had to tie up our cooler after a friendly stray dog tried to snag a snack (probably feeding puppies nearby).
This beach is safe for swimming — no rip currents, calm surf inside the cove, and incredible scenery. It was our favorite beach of the entire trip, hands down. If you’re visiting Puerto Rico, make a day of it here — you won’t...
Read moreMy wife and I got a chance to get here for a few hours so I could get in some snorkeling. It is about 45 Minutes (depending of traffic) or 35 miles from San Juan to the beach on highway 22 heading west and is north of Manati. There is plenty of parking there and a few places that your car can sit in the shade if you get there at a good time. Since it was a Thursday and it was still early it was not crowded, we were there from about 10:00 until 13:30 because we had to get back to San Juan. The beach is interesting since it has an inlet that brings in waves but not real hard ones like along a normal beach, by the time they get to you it is just a little swell at your feet. As for swimming and snorkeling it is great but you still need to be careful. Along the edge of the water is some algae and I was wearing water shoes but still almost fell! Plus right at the edge in the one area (see pictures) it drops off and is about 6-8 feet deep, also along that wall are some Sea Urchins which will be painful if you bump into one. A good place to go into the water if you have children or you just want to be in at waist deep is on the West side of the inlet. I can not say anything about the East side because I did not go in that area.
When we first got there to the beach we did climb up on the rocks at the mouth of the inlet and look out into the Caribbean which was a dark blue. You could also see hundreds of Sea Urchins in some of the closed inlets.
If you find the time and you are in the area it is worth going over there for a few hours. There was a guy selling food and things to drink but we did not...
Read moreMar Chiquita is an absolute treasure that perfectly showcases the natural beauty of Puerto Rico. Nestled in Manatí, this stunning cove is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience a unique and serene beach setting away from the bustling crowds.
The beach’s distinctive crescent shape, formed by two dramatic limestone formations, creates a natural pool with crystal-clear turquoise waters. It’s like Mother Nature decided to carve out her own private paradise just for you. The contrast between the calm swimming area and the waves crashing against the rocks is mesmerizing—perfect for relaxation and incredible photo opportunities.
When the waters are calm, it’s an ideal spot for swimming, wading, and even a little snorkeling. The shallow, protected area is great for cooling off while enjoying the view of the open ocean through the narrow channel. Just be mindful of the conditions, as the currents can get stronger during certain seasons.
While there aren’t many amenities (so pack snacks, water, and sun protection), the simplicity of Mar Chiquita is part of its charm. It’s all about connecting with nature, listening to the waves, and soaking in the sun on the soft sand. Occasionally, local vendors pop up, offering tasty Puerto Rican treats to round out the experience.
Mar Chiquita is a place that feels like a hidden secret you’re lucky to discover. Whether you’re seeking tranquility, stunning landscapes, or a unique coastal adventure, this beach delivers in every way. Highly recommend making the trip—it’s an experience you...
