General Impression: Small, quaint campground set alongside Tongue River. Cost $20.34/ night Value: 2 The campground was okay, but it’s dry camping. It feels a bit steep for a place to park overnight.
Campground: Small loop style campground with 2 pull throughs and some smaller back ins. Only 20 sites total. No campsite numbers, but it was the first large pull through going into the park and heading right. It was a gravel pull through with some low hanging branches. Fairly level left to right, a low in front and needing some leveling. No hookups. There is a water spigot across the road so if you have long enough hose, you could refill your fresh water. Our site had a picnic table and fire ring with layover grill attachment. No propane or dump station. No wifi. Starlink was fast enough to stream, barely. Verizon had double the speed.
Noise Level: This campground was in town and near the interstate. So there was both interstate and train noise.
Amenities: They had pit toilets that looked fairly new, but need a cleaning. They have trash cans at every site. No pool or laundry, but they do have a nice playground for the kids.
Dog friendly: There weren’t any off leash areas but there was grassy areas to walk your dogs and they have multiple pick up stations with fully stocked. One thing that did bother us a bit about this campground is it seemed to have a lot of off leash dogs. We had multiple encounters with dogs running up to our dog while we were out walking. Camp store: No camp store. There is a corner grocery about 7 miles away and a Walmart in Sheridan about 19 miles away.
Camp staff interactions: None. They have a payment spot at the entrance.
Additional info: This is Cash only – or maybe they accept checks, not really sure. But there is no pen to register. So bring change and a pen. Suspension walking bridge at one end of the park allows you to...
Read moreNice little campground. Running water at some of the sites, bathrooms could use a little more attention however. There is a little park in the middle with a slide, a large wood carved buffalo and a couple things to climb on. Also there is a swimming hole with ropes to swing off of, we seen a lot of locals there during the hot parts of the day. If you prefer having hookups there is an rv park a little down the road and one in Dayton as well!
Ranchester, wy has lots of amenities including an amazing restaurant we tried called the buckshot saloon, and Sheridan is just a short 15 minute drive south which has your normal city stuff-walmart, mechanics, more restaurants etc... I also recommend trying the food at parkman (15-20 mins north on the old highway)
My grandma stays here several times a year and occasionally catches fish in the river that runs through the park (trout and whitefish). The mountains are close as well as a beautiful canyon near Dayton (15 minutes west of ranchester).
Current rates are $6/ night for wyo residents and $11/ night for out of staters. Dogs are welcome but are supposed to be leashed. If your just passing through or are looking for a quiet spot to relax this is one of the good ones! I have heard of this park occasionally flooding in the spring so be sure to look up the weather there! Hope this helps my...
Read moreA beautiful, well maintained state historical park. Not really any historical items available in the park other than a monument on the camping side of the park.
The campground is a first come first serve. For non-residents, the charge is $20.34/nite. There are 2 spigots available for water in the campground. One is by the pit toilet and second not far, but on the inside of the campground circle. No electric or sewer (dry camping). Playground for children. The Tongue River still had its spring flow and was very high. Nothing to play in at this time in early May. Some railroad noise from trains passing between the village and I-90. Our pull through was gravel and level.
Really think people would really enjoy stopping...
