Beartooth Scenic Byway - All American Road — Attraction in Red Lodge

The Beartooth Highway is a section of US 212, that runs from MN to Yellowstone Park. In 1931, work began on the Beartooth Highway, linking Red Lodge, MT to Yellowstone National Park; it was officially opened in 1936. The Highway passes over the Beartooth Pass in Wyoming at 10,947 feet. Because of heavy snowfall at the top, the pass is usually open each year only from mid-May through mid-October, weather permitting. And during this time, snow is still possible, and rain is likely. But, oh how lovely it is! There are switchbacks and narrow mountain curves, so this is not a fast highway, even if this section from Red Lodge, MT to Yellowstone is roughly just 125 miles. Be prepared with warmer clothing, even in mid summer. When you stop at a viewpoint, it almost certainly will be very windy. And Please. Please watch your children when you do stop and get out. Let me start off by saying I am terrified of heights, so this review may be biased. Don’t get me wrong, the views were beautiful (photos below). If you even have a slight fear of heights, I do not recommend this route. I was hoping and praying once I saw how beautiful it was I would forget that it looks like I’m about to fall off the edge of a 10,000 foot mountain, but unfortunately that didn’t happen and it was completely unenjoyable for me. My mom on the other hand, said it was such an amazing experience. So take that as you will. I wanted to enjoy the drive so badly, but it does have quite a few scary turns. If the word beauty was a road this would be it. I planned a nine-day road trip just to come drive this road and I will forever remember this one. It truly reminds you of why we call this place America the Beautiful. Awe inspiring.
