This is the neighborhood Buddhist temple near the Microsoft Redmond campus. It was built in 1985 when eight families immigrated from Taiwan to Redmond. This temple is the founding temple of over 300 True Buddha School temples and dharma centers around the world.
One of the original families was the True Buddha School founder and root guru - Grandmaster Sheng-yen Lu. He still lives in the Seattle area and goes to the temple Mon-Sat. to greet and bless disciples and visitors, to teach, to paint (a well-known artist), to write (a prolific Buddhist author with 294 books in print by writing one article a day for over 50 years).
If you are seeking divination, you are welcome to use the moon blocks and fortune sticks (with permission) to receive guidance from the Golden Mother of the Jade Pond, the reigning goddess of the temple. Pray to Golden Mother for strength and healing of all sorts. If you are looking for additional spiritual healing to complement your doctor's care, you can pray to Golden mother first and then purchase mantra papers from the gift shop and burn them in one of the six furnaces that correspond to different areas for the body, to speed the eradication of your health issues.
The temple is said to have very auspicious feng shui - many visitors attest to the calming energy when they meditate in the temple for a few minutes. You are free to take a cushion and sit comfortably to practice your breathing and mindfulness exercises. The only heads up would be to not expect a complete quiet surrounding. The temple sometimes gets really busy with visitors. The guided tours, even in hushed voices, can be noisy. If you are looking for a more peaceful atmosphere, go on a Sunday morning. There would be way less people and you get to enjoy the serenity.
The reverends and volunteers are so friendly and eager to help. If you are genuinely interested in learning Buddhism, this temple is a great resource. But even if you are not, you are always welcome to go and have a blessing from the buddhas.
Go as you are, no pressure, no assumption. Buddhism cares very little about conversion. Instead, “what's meant to be” is one of the guiding philosophies/life...
