I wouldn't say it's a hidden gem, but hey, it's less crowded, offers the option to get any BBQ spot or grill, and has an awesome view of the lake. What else can you wish for on a BBQ day out!
One of New Jersey's most northern state parks near the New York border. It's home to Shepherd Lake Recreation Area. This isolated haven usually doesn't have the crowds of the state's other popular water areas.
We spent the day at Shepherd Lake, and honestly, it was such a chill spot! The lake itself is beautiful—super peaceful. So it feels like a little escape from the chaos.
There’s a small beach area if you’re into swimming, and we saw people fishing and kayaking too. The dock is popular with fishers and boaters, and there's even a nearby playground to keep the kids busy.
Parking was easy, and the area was clean and well-maintained.

Read moreThis is a great place to come for a little picnic or barbecue, there are many tables and grills around the area with a few public restrooms and portable toilets available. There is a large amount of parking here, and there is a local trail where you can walk, jog, run or cycle. Be wary of the posters near this trail as there could be bears in the vicinity. There is a seasonal area where you can rent pedal boats and kayaks to enjoy the lake. The prices vary by hour and type of boat selected and the staff are very friendly. Read moreFirst time since 2023 but first time was well over 20 years ago. Brought my Wife and Daughter here for a day at the lake. Basically stay around the lake haven't taken trails as of yet. I think it's another one of our Beautiful State Parks. One you can swim, fish, kayak, hike and grill. The concession stand sells the things you need if you don't want to grill or have your picnic needs. Game Wardens keep an eye out for those who fishing without a license. They also here making sure no nonsense is going on.
