A nice hike after a good rain on a brisk day. The flow of the falls changes depending on how much it rained recently. The drive is set back on country roads and takes a minute to get to. Also within this hike along the base of Freedom Falls is an old iron furnace. The furnace has started to weather and collapse in spots over the last few years. Farther down the road from this location is the Rockland tunnel.

I would consider this hiking terrain moderate. "Moderate terrain generally refers to trails or paths that are suitable for hikers with some basic experience and a moderate level of fitness. These trails may involve some elevation changes, but not as steep or challenging as strenuous or difficult trails. They also may include some obstacles, such as rocks or roots, but not to the point where they are overly difficult to navigate."

This place is easy to miss because it's on a gravel road with no signs that mark its location. The path to the falls is fairly short but steep and not marked or maintained, so it's not for the faint of heart. It all works in your favor if you don't like sharing wonders of nature with hordes of tourists in minivans. There were still enough people there to feel far from deserted though. Great place for a dip or a natural shower on a hot day. No amenities of any kind and little room to sit or lay on the rocks under the fall. Other interesting places to visit in the vicinity (a bridge and a tunnel, for starters) so you may as well take a full...

We have a sedan, not a 4 wheel drive or jeep. The road as given and reviewed here was doable, but there were a few steep rough spots we were concerned about. The falls were a trickle yesterday (Oct 13 '23), but the woods were beautiful, well worth the trip. We met some local girls in the woods who told us an alternate route back to Emlenton. If you're city slickers like us, try putting in your map quest, from Emlenton: Hughes Park, Rockland, freedom falls. It seems longer, but you'll save time and anxiety. Park by the Big Rock. There are 2 trails down on either side of the rock, but if you proceed about 50 yards beyond, there is a wide...

From Brady’s bend overlook to freedom falls, it is a gorgeous view of backcountry Pennsylvania!! However Google maps takes you though a very rough and extremely rocky 5 miles patch though a narrow forest which could have been avoided but I did not know! Also because there is little to no cell reception (AT&T service), I missed the turn to go towards the falls. The falls were not as lush as some of the pictures I have seen but it’s also because it’s been a drier month (august) here. The hike down to the falls is very steep and requires some good shoes and balance, but the area was indeed beautiful and worth the drive in.

Nice falls that are hard to find. We were riding tha Allegheny River Trail and there is no marking for the falls. The road to the falls is on the west side of the Rockland tunnel. There is a grey house with white trim and black shutters on the riverside. Across the trail are numerous mail and newspaper boxes. The road is to the left of these boxes. It is a steep dirt/gravel road. There is no markings here either. It is about a quarter mile up. Look for a pull off and hear the falls. Walk down the path about a 200 hundred yards to the falls.
