As far as tunnels go, this one is in really good shape. The tunnel is about a half mile long, entirely straight except for near the eastern portal - so you can't see all the way through. It is therefore pretty dark in the middle, so some sort of light is recommended. The surface is paved all the way through, wide enough for two bike lanes and with reflectors on each side of the path and down the middle. Construction on the inside is brick and concrete; it is well-kept, with only a few sections where debris has fallen to the tunnel floor. We visited in early March, while temperatures were below freezing, and there were huge icicles as mentioned by others. The ice is only the last 50-100 feet on the east side of the tunnel, but melting and freezing makes huge mounds of ice on the ground too. This makes treacherous conditions that may be impassable for some, so I suggest visiting after the spring thaw. There is enough parking at the bottom for maybe eight cars, which may fill up depending on the day/time. It's a cool spot, and appropriately popular! If the lot at the bottom of the hill is full, you may be able to park up at Freedom Falls/Rockland Furnace, where there are several pulloffs, and walk...
Read moreThis tunnel is so cool! It's around a half mile through the old re-purposed train tunnel. Bikes and walkers are welcome, but be sure to read the posted rules! If you are scared of the dark or have trouble getting around, I recommend taking a good flashlight with you so you don't fall off the edge of the path. Beware some of the graffiti on the inside of the tunnel are not for little eyes. There is a really good mural of mushrooms around halfway through that you should check out! This is also very close to Freedom Falls! Also, if you're into local history, there are signs posted before the tunnel that tell you the exact length of it and also some local history about the tunnel! I can't wait to go back and take my...
Read moreThis was a dark and eerie walk this time of year and cold one too so make sure to bring a light jacket, a flash light and maybe a friend. This paved tunnel is around a 1/2 mile long and is wheelchair accessible. The closed end has a door to pass thru to see the river and is currently open. It's definitely a cool thing to do but just be careful because it is pitch black in there and the graffiti maybe offensive to some. I give this adventure a 7/10 Please show me your love by giving me a reaction to my review and pics to help me improve on my next adventure and follow me to see where...
