My wife and I camped the Pigeon Roost hike in campground with our dog.
The trail is a loop and is ~4 miles from the trailhead to the campsite. The campsite is primitive. Tent pads and a firepit. Everything else is on you.
We loved it. The trail passes close to Beaver Lake several times, the views of the lake bluffs and other vistas along the trail are beautiful. We found ourselves stopping to pause and admire the scenery longer than necessary for a rest break.
The trail is well trafficked by hikers, trail runners, and campers like ourselves. We met several friendly people and pups along the trail. I'd like to give a special mention to Red, who had amazing tips for first time hike-in-campers who are just getting into the hobby.
The trail that we hiked was an easy hike. There was no difficulty finding the path, and there are no obstacles to traverse or rocks to climb. That being said: This is the Ozarks, there will be hills to climb up, and then climb down. It will be a workout. The only "hazard" is that the downhill portion of parts of the trail is gravel that is loose enough to lose your footing.
Notes: The trailhead has no water, just a pit toilet, some hand sanitizer, and an informational placard with a sign in sheet. The visitor center down the road has amenities.
The trails is rough limestone gravel in most places, watch your dog's feet.
Speaking of dogs, they are allowed on trail if...
Read moreWent to the amazing #hobbsstatepark an @arkansasstateparks with the intention of doing lots of hiking a few days ago! Unfortunately the temperature was up and the air quality was poor. These two things didn’t bode well for me and I had to content myself with exploring their EXCEPTIONAL Visitor’s Center and the paths surrounding it. The Center’s staff greeted me immediately, showed me maps and QR codes of the available trails, asked the type and distance of hiking we would like to do, basically curated our experience for us. Other staff invited us into interactive learning experiences. There are displays with live and preserved creatures, local flora, historical artifacts, water features and so much more inside this large air conditioned space. I encourage you to take the entire family. Then explore all that the Natural State has to offer on and around Beaver Lake for hikers, bikers and water activities. photos by lynneannec subject to copyright #photography #lynneannec #naturephotography #lifeinphotos #northwestarkansas #northwestarkansasphotography #waterfalls #hiking #treking #mountainbiking #thenaturalstate...
Read moreI have been here several times, but this visit was originally to pick up my hunting tags for the next week. While there, the staff was so friendly and informative that I felt compelled to buy a few items that I had seen before but never grabbed. There were no other customers or visitors, so I had plenty of time to walk around and look at the dioramas and the local crafts for sale. This is a superbly crafted visitor center with lots of information about the area and wildlife. There is also a parking area for the many bike trails that cross through Hobbs. This is a wonderful stop on your journey though northwest Arkansas and on your way to War Eagle. Since my last visit, they have added a large and new parking area. Still a great short stop if you are...
