Lake Hopatcong — Attraction in Roxbury Township

Wife and I took the boat out Wednesday 05/27/2020. Lake in bad shape. Fishing the docks and shore area for bass. Waisted our time with the weeds both flouting and growing. Other bass fisherman that day were calling it quits. Going under the River Styx bridge you have to stop and turn around it is so clogged up at the surface and growing. Have boats 50 years on Lake Hopatcong and never saw this at this Spring time of year. Some of it is like paste or glue and clogged my water intake on my Mercury several times. First time it ever happened . Just made it back with a small stream of water and spent an hour cleaning the pump and tubes. Lowrance showed water temp 67%. (Hello summer) hope the weed cutting machines will help but I think we are on the verge of found memories of Lake Hopatcong. I will always support the lake and zi pray for its recovery. Nice, big(!) lake, and I really like that they are not overfilled with people.

Be aware that they CLOSE the entry once they are at capacity, so that you will not be let in if you arrive too late. Swimming starts at 10 am. We were there at 9am, and the parking lot was already half full. Definitely arrive before 10 am, to make sure that you will be let in -- especially if the weather is nice.

One thing that I did not like is that there are a loooot of goose droppings on land by the water and also inside the water.

We went for stand-up paddling (SUP), and while there are some boats and jet skis, there is kore than enough space for everyone to do their water sports without disturbing each other.

There’s so much to do on Lake Hopatcong! Make sure you plan your day in advance so you don’t miss out on all it has to offer. It gets busy on the weekends so be sure to make reservations for everything. The state park is almost guaranteed to be filled by noon, most of the restaurants will have a 2 hour wait for dinner, boat rentals will all be taken, and last but not least if you want to fly a jetpack with us we only take 6 people per day. Don’t wait till the day of to make your reservation!
