Review of Coronado Heights Castle, Lindsborg, Kansas

Visiting Coronado Heights Castle in Lindsborg, Kansas, was an enchanting and unforgettable experience. Nestled atop a scenic hill, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Kansas countryside that are simply awe-inspiring.

The journey to the castle is part of the charm, with a winding road leading you through beautiful landscapes that set the stage for the picturesque destination. Once you arrive, the stone structure of Coronado Heights Castle immediately captures your imagination, transporting you to another time and place.

The castle itself is a fascinating piece of history, with its rustic stone architecture and quaint, medieval-inspired design. Exploring the various nooks and crannies of the castle is a delight, and the lookout points provide some of the most stunning views you'll find in the region. It's the perfect spot for photography enthusiasts, history buffs, or anyone looking to enjoy a serene and picturesque setting.

One of the highlights of my visit was the peacefulness and tranquility of the area. Despite being a popular spot, it never felt crowded or rushed, allowing me to fully soak in the beauty and calm of my surroundings. The picnic areas around the castle are well-maintained, providing a great place to relax and enjoy a meal with a view.

The history of Coronado Heights Castle adds an extra layer of interest to the visit. Learning about its construction during the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration project and its connection to the legend of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado gives the site a rich cultural significance.

Whether you're a local or a traveler passing through, Coronado Heights Castle is a must-visit destination that offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and tranquility. It's a perfect spot for a day trip, a romantic outing, or a family adventure. I left feeling rejuvenated and inspired by the stunning scenery and fascinating history, and I can't...

Free!! Easy to get to and plenty of space to park right next to the castle. Super fun family outing. We spent about an hour here. They have several fire pit oven areas and really fun walking trails. Very easy trails, stair, and hiking area. Bathrooms are just seats and holes in the ground which were very very dirty. I would love given 5 stars if the toilets were clean and there was a little table, shelf, or area for kids or diaper changing. Overall a fun place with a good view. We would go back for sure.

Went on a Sunday afternoon, a busy time, and there were 4 other groups there. The first time we went on a Tuesday afternoon and there was just one other group.

Accessibility ♿️: 0/5 rough ground, stairs, and hiking paths. Kid friendly: 3/5 definitely keep your eye on them as the activities and castle could be quite hazardous. Make sure to go to the fire area by the cedar trees to the right of the castle. There are super cool rock formations. No changing area and no...

Coronado Heights is one of Kansas hidden gems, and like many others in this beautiful state, it is safely tucked away from time and roads most frequently traveled- even by the locals. Driving towards the mound on a dirt road it would be too easy to shrug my shoulders and stick by the "Kansas is flat" theory, if it wasn't for how much larger the hill appeared the closer I was. After traveling to 10 of Kansas 142 named peaks, recognized by the National Geological Service (USGS), I was astonished that Coronado didn't make it on their list. Especially after watching the sun sink into the horizon over such a vast expanse of gorgeous farmland. Named peak or not, this is a great place to stretch your legs if your passing by on nearby highway US-81, take your lady on a picnic, show the entire family, or simply enjoy the solitude and spend some time...

We were visiting a friend in town and my girlfriend had never seen the castle so I made it a priority to go. Roads were pretty good going out to the area. Going up the hill to the castle had a lot of areas that were washed out a bit from the recent rains but was easily traversed. The area is kept up pretty well and was clean. There were the usual signs of vandalism, but mostly just painting on the rocks. This is a beautiful area to take a picnic lunch with you as there are many private areas with rock tables to sit at and enjoy the panoramic views. There is no electricity here so come prepared. It is not handicap friendly, but if you are handicapped and can get around decent, it is worth the drive up. There are trash cans for waste and restrooms (pit toilet) on site.

If you are into historic WPA works from the 1930's or interested in Coronado's search for the seven cities of gold then you might find this site interesting. Based on a coin found at this location it is believed that Coronado may have ended his search on this small hill top. The castle is very small. Smaller than most houses, but it is interesting to see. Functional fireplaces and concrete tables make it almost seem liveable. This would be a great place to view the area and watch sunrises and sunsets from. The panoramic view. From the looks of a burn barrel at the top of the castle it looks like kids might hang here at night. Don't drive out of your way to see this, but if you are in the area give it a peek.

You can drive all the way to the top of Coronado Heights, don't let that flight of stairs deter you from this amazing landmark :) There are gorgeous hiking trails, plenty of picnic areas and you can go INSIDE the structure all the way up to the top. The view from the castle roof in mid June included wheat fields, an abundance of lush green and the curvature of the Earth. @furry_sherman_tank loved watching lizards skitter around on the sandstone and peeking out from the roof windows! The owner of the Viking Hotel told us that locals take telescopes up sometimes for splendid stargazing opportunities. I definitely recommend you make this a highlight of your visit to Salina/Lindsborg.
