We moved out of state and had to say goodbye to my son's favorite place on earth. The wonderful people that run the California Wolf Center are very knowledgeable and kind and always make visiting a terrific experience. Over the years, we visited many times, going to Julian for the weekend and taking several tours each weekend. Each tour has an educational component where you learn more about these gentle and misunderstood animals and their importance to the ecosystem. You then visit 2 habitats, 1 with the Mexican gray wolf ambassadors and 1 with the Rocky Mountain gray wolf (North American/Timber wolf) ambassadors. Most of the wolves stay in a remote habitat so they can be kept as wild as possible for re-introduction into a natural habitat. Julian is a wonderful town with friendly people and lots of history. Stay at the Julian Lodge to experience it to the fullest. Besides a small gift shop at the wolf center itself, there's a big building next door to the Julian Lodge that has an education center and big, wonderful gift shop with something for everyone. The instructions on the website are very accurate regarding arrival and visiting. This is a terrific weekend getaway that you can enjoy over and over again! We'll miss it so much! Thanks for...
Read moreWe have visited many times now and are always pleased with our experience. We truly appreciate their focus on the health and well-being of the wolves. In fact, you have to make reservations (limited spots) and the wolves are kept far off the main road, which requires the reserved groups to follow an escort by vehicle. Again, measures taken in consideration of the wolves. So, be patient and respectful.
Also, we enjoy how they rotate the tour guides because we always learn something new. They encourage questions- they love the wolves and love talking about them!
I recommend joining the Wild Wolf Pack! This membership covers admission for 4 people (individual, dual and other groups up to 10 people are offered too). The Wolf Conservation Tour is included with your membership and you get a deep discount on the Behavioral Enrichment Tour. It’s well worth it.
Just wanted to add that Thor is our favorite Mexican Gray Wolf and Poppy is our favorite Northern American Gray Wolf! Did I mention you can sponsor a Wolf? Yes, you can!
Please check out their website for even more information and opportunities to support these beautiful animals!
Please note, that they are a non-profit...
Read moreSo educational and great to see how knowledgeable and passionate the workers are here . No frills experience , but quite unforgettable. Just when you thought you knew all you needed to know from school, animal planet , or viral videos, the info shared with you here about wolves takes it several levels up. If you're looking for lots of interaction and to have your socks knocked off from this experience, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're an animal lover and have a genuine interest in seeing these animals au natural , it'll be worth your while. It's non-profit so you can expect to have to compromise on some comforts. Really wish the road were more comfortable to drive on and bathroom was better , seating area wasn't so cramped, but we all made it in one piece , were decently comfortable , and got a great deal on Groupon. We left loving and appreciating these animals so much more and that's what matters. It isn't too far from Julian main Street too so definitely allot a couple hours to tack this onto your itinerary if you happen to be...
