I have an affinity and love for Mission Trails. The trails are well cared for, and you couldn't ask for a more accessible location. It's impressive how this natural park can be situated smack in a central location to just about anywhere in San Diego, yet maintain its natural beauty and feeling of isolation. Kwaay Paay mountain is central to the park, but the trail heads (there are two) are only found on the east side of the park. Being just over a mile oh, it's a super short trail. It starts out as more of a rolling, gentle climb, and gets a little more intense near the end. As you close in on the peak, there are a few areas that are going to require some rock scrambling, although it's nothing that can't be handled easily with a trekking pole. Have fun!

South trail hike The main train looked a little boring so I went up the rock climbing trail. It was pretty tuff to get over some of the rocks and it had a steep incline. I Managed to find a way up to the top without coming down the north head of the climbers loop. I’m pretty out of shape and was able to climb up this path with a few breaks. You will need both your hands to climb up this way. I’ve seen some websites rate this as a hike only for ā€œexperienced hikers with proper gearā€ but I didn’t know that before hiking. Nearly missed stepping on a rattle snake and the view was decent. Overall a fun hike and a gnarly leg workout.

Great day hike that is about 45 minutes each way at a steady pace. The last part of the ascent is the most difficult part but the view is worth it at the end. You can find wild sage growing on the sides of the trail. I was happy to knock down the ā€œdecorativeā€ piles of rocks people leave behind on the side as this trail, and any other trail, is a place where you leave no trace!

Hiking is great exercise. This trail is unique in that it's relatively short and quick. An average person in good health can be up and down in an hour. But you'll want to spend time at the top enjoying the views! While most mountains and trails have switchbacks and some level areas, Kwaay Paay feels pretty much like you're just hiking straight up all the time. (Though there are a couple of flat spots to catch your breath.) There are areas with steps and other areas that are quite narrow. Be patient with yourself, take breaks, say hello to other hikers, watch for snakes, don't leave trash, and enjoy this short hike gem in Mission...
