I love this place, great place to watch a sunset and hang out. A lot of people run in this area and do yoga which is cool if you’re into that stuff. The area holds a minority of performance waves with many lesser alternatives. The ability required to surf these waves often varies with conditions. When the swell is big, there are always a lot of people about and occasional emergency lifeguard runs. Strong currents are predictable at these times. Surfers inexperienced with the area are often unable to get back up the cliff trails during bigger days with higher tides. Some have been battered against the cliffs while trying to exit the water. Also, no matter how big the waves, the cliffs themselves present formidable danger. Almost everything that walks or rolls has taken the short route to the bottom. As with any good California reefbreaks that are buffered by steep cliffs, nice homes and relative isolation, Point Loma is tight-knit community. Many of the surfers here are third-generation locals and almost all of them have augmented their working lives to accommodate their time in the water. King-of-the-hill style localism is in practice. Common sense goes a long way. Paddle out one at a time and, to score points in the eyes of the salty dogs, don't...
Read moreThis is a fairly long trail in Ocean Beach between the ocean and the road, right at the edge of the cliffs in some places. It is not a place to go for solitude as it is popular. My husband and I saw where one company had set up an adorable tent for a young couple's romantic picnic! The trail is mostly flat (or mildly up and down) and sandy, but in some places it is very uneven dirt or mud with exposed roots, little water drainage ditches, and spots where the land has given way and left a "hole" in the ground. Some of these holes in the trail cause the hiker to step over the guard rail into the road for a short stretch. Right now there is a California Superbloom, and the rolling hills are covered with a variety of daisies and heartbreakingly pretty deep pink and lavender blooms on succulent plants. So photography options are great, as is the birdwatching. Many of the birds remain hidden in the sage and flowering plants, so you have to ID them by song. But I got some lovely photos of a Song Sparrow, some -- I think -- Lapland Longspur, and an Osprey who sat below us on a ledge looking for fish for quite awhile. Basically, I highly recommend it. You can walk as short or as long as you want, and also watch the surfers...
Read moreI would like to start by saying this is a zen place. A great place to exhale and relax. You will find a ton of people doing yoga here for a reason. It is the perfect atmosphere for it. Not only is it free, but the nature is beautiful and peaceful. You are less than 100 yards from an actual beach. You can hear only the waves if you close your eye's (best part for me) which I highly recommend if you are coming here. Enjoy it while you can. Whether you are visiting or live here. Take off your mask and breathe in the fresh air. Take a moment for yourself. You deserve it. It really does help, I promise. Covid can not take away that freedom from me. I love to come here when I am stressed out to get a bit of relaxation. The parking is free so you do not have to worry about parking either. Get here a bit early so that you do not have to worry about parking. You can also pay for parking which is only half a mile. It is worth the walk. If you have the time, do it. It is worth a day...
