Our visit to the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site was truly exceptional—an absolute five-star experience! From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in the rich and pivotal history of Texas, walking in the footsteps of the original settlers who helped shape the state’s destiny. The museum itself is beautifully designed, blending modern interactive exhibits with authentic artifacts, including Stephen F. Austin’s original portable desk and a working 1830s printing press. The multimedia displays and custom murals brought the stories of the town to life, making the experience engaging for all ages. We especially enjoyed the hands-on activities and the large interactive wall mural that let us explore the historic layout of San Felipe before Texas Independence. The grounds are meticulously maintained, with interpretive trails, shaded seating, and outdoor exhibits that make it easy to imagine life in the early 1800s. The replica log cabin, bronze statue of Stephen F. Austin, and commemorative obelisk are standout features that add depth to the visit. We were also impressed by the knowledgeable guides who made the history accessible and entertaining, and the friendly staff who made us feel welcome throughout our visit. Families will find plenty to do, from interactive demonstrations and living history events to educational programs for children. The site is also ADA accessible, with convenient amenities like clean restrooms, on-site parking, and a well-stocked gift shop filled with local products. Whether you’re a Texas history buff or just looking for a unique and memorable outing, San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is a must-see destination. We left with a deeper appreciation for the state’s heritage and can’t wait to return. Highly...
Read moreWe walked in at about 1 in the afternoon and were greeted by a helpful volunteer. As soon as you walk in, the floor you are stepping on is actually a map of the area surrounding the historic San Felipe de Austin civilization. The museum is very interactive, with large touchscreens, and even a "dress-up studio" where you can pretend to be an early settler. There is a timeline on the wall, make sure not to miss this, as it gives you a lot of information and has many artifacts that were recovered. Heading outside, you'll see a more detailed map of the city they built. There is also a small forest you can walk through and see some of the markers where there is information about what they found at that specific spot. Don't miss the actual remnants of the civilization that are just across the road; they have some nice photo spots, like in front of the statue. All in all, our experience of this site was amazing; it is truly...
Read moreAbsolutely incredible museum and restoration where we learned a ton about the history of Texas, the revolution, and what life was like "back in the day." Seeing the printing press in action and being able to walk through buildings that were modeled on the original structures in Austin's colony was an eye-opening and mind-blowing experience. And being able to stand on the actual streets and buildings where Austin, Travis, and others lived and worked was beyond cool. Everyone who lives in Texas, is proud of their state and nation, and has an interest in how things came to be should plan to spend a day here. We intended to maybe spend an hour but wound up making a full day of it with walks to the monument across the street and a picnic. Everyone was super friendly and obviously enjoyed sharing their knowledge with visitors. Can't...
