Hidden amidst the picturesque landscape, South Lake Park is a fabulous park that promises serenity and natural beauty. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this park has something to offer.
The easy hiking trail at South Lake Park is perfect for all skill levels. With our trusty companion, Dash, by our side, we meandered through lush greenery, enjoying the fresh air and scenic views. The trail is well-maintained, making it accessible even for beginners.
After a refreshing rain shower, the sky transformed into a canvas of beautiful clouds. Their billowy shapes danced above us, casting playful shadows on the path. And then, there they were—the purple ceanothus flowers—a burst of color against the verdant backdrop. Their delicate blooms seemed to celebrate the rain, and we couldn’t help but pause to admire their elegance.
The centerpiece of South Lake Park is, of course, the tranquil lake. Its glassy surface mirrored the surrounding trees, creating a soothing ambiance. As we strolled along the shore, the ripples seemed to carry away our worries. This was more than a hike; it was a therapeutic escape from our busy lives.
South Lake Park’s accessibility is a major plus. Situated next to Calstate San Marco’s campus, it’s a quick escape for students, locals, and anyone seeking solace. No long drives or complicated directions—just a peaceful oasis waiting to be explored.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a dog lover, or simply in need of tranquility, South Lake Park delivers. So lace up your hiking boots, leash up Dash, and let the beauty of this serene haven...
Read moreDidn't end up doing the trail. It was over 100 degrees today, it didnt seem like a good idea, to take our dog in the heat. will re-rate and edit this review once we do the trail, on a less hot day.
In all honesty, this trail is in the south lake park located in the san marcos residential and student housing area, behind CSUSM (Cal State University San Marcos), on a pretty big up hill.
What you drive up to is this tiny parking area at the entrance of the residential homes, with nothing there. If you look to your left you'll see a trash can which marks the beginning of the trail, which is still on a mountain, but looked flat. Saw a couple of
bikers, doesn't seem to have , much shade, like lots of dirt trail, may a few tress here and there. From the parking you can see the lake and water, I have read you can hike to a dog "beach", seemed like a lil body of water with may be a lil bit of sad/dirt/shore you can view. It's supposed to be 1.5 miles loop, and dog friendly, but I don't reccommend bring your dogs, or pets when its too hot, out. It felt hot for us just standing there.
heads up, if you get to the end of this review, there is lake san marcos near by, with air bnb rentals, and resort area, which seems pretty nice, and well kept. You can see a really nice lake, dogs and people are not allowed inside the lake, but you are allowed to paddle board on it I heard. You are also able to rent boats on, and they have dog friendly boats, electric ones are $150 per hour. If you stay in the hotel, 1 hour of boat ride is free, they also offer a $50 pool movie at the...
Read moreI am jealous because it would be wonderful to live in the neighborhood adjacent to this park. In addition, the paved 2-way bike path and super wide decomposed granite pathway that runs along Sunstone Drive are fantastic. The parking lot was about 1/3 full when we visited after 10am on a Friday. We walked around the lake in a clockwise direction with no one visible ahead of us, but we passed several couples and clusters walking counter clockwise. It is a privilege to view of the verdant hillsides that surround this lake from perspectives providing continuous natural coverage without even a hint of modern life. Views with no roads, trails or buildings visible. At times it was even almost quiet - quite unusual for such a short trail. It isn't as flat as I expected, but the ups and downs are short and easy to traverse, but might be challenging with a stroller. We passed 3 or 4 dogs, but all were leashed. This is a beautiful place to get away from our crushing civilization for a few minutes, and it is right here...
