Very picturesque area. The one thing that I didn’t know about was that there was 2 parking lots. One where the boardwalk begins and the other one is the town parking lot which is right at the end of the walk before the beach area. So we wanted to walk the whole thing so we walked to the other lot where it began and walked from there so we had to back track. No big deal unless you don’t want to backtrack. There is no hand railing so have to pay attention and watch small children carefully it’s a estuary or tidal area. People swimming everywhere and fishing foe blue crabs. Then at the end of rth e boardwalk is the beach. It’s the bayside so it seemed calm and was a rocky beach not much sand. Every size rock, pebble area, fist size and up. It was 20$ to park at either lot of you don’t have the town pass. They stop collecting at 4. Don’t know when they just stop collecting for the season. Good place to stop on way home when bridges are all jammed and let traffic pass by. They are goin to redo the whole walk eventually so if u want to see the...
Read moreWe didn’t go to Sandwich for a sandwich, though we probably should have while exploring Cape Cod.
Instead, we were drawn to check out the 1,350-foot Sandwich Boardwalk, a local treasure since 1875 that stretches over a marsh leading to Cape Cod Bay.
How cool is it?
National Geographic once picked it as one of the top 10 boardwalks in the U.S.
The latest version, which cost $3.2 million, opened in 2023. It needed to be replaced after damage from a 2013 blizzard and subsequent wear and tear.
Approaching the boardwalk, we were surprised to see men wading in the marsh.
Turns out they were digging for clams and oysters. Makes sense since an early version of the boardwalk featured fishing shacks on either side.
An oysterman I spoke with said it was a lot of effort for the basket of clams and oysters he left with. But he said it was worth it because he was having a party and the others coming were bringing wine.
Glad we stopped here. We’ll have to get that sandwich in...
Read moreBeautiful area! Lots of wildlife. Unfortunately while there we came across an injured comerant. Locals said it had been there since yesterday. We called 911 and was referred to cape cod wildlife management who referred us to sandwich animal control. They were aware of the bird and thought it was mobile. We informed them that the bird had not moved while we walked the length of the beach x2. She believed it had avian flu and advised us not to touch the bird. One cannot assume. It might only be injured. She was sending someone to attend to the bird. We asked that if anything could be done to save it's life we would appreciate it. Remaining hopeful as the bird was responsive to our presence. Please do...
