Get thee hence to Santa Cruz Shakespeare in haste! A real gem in the community, just don’t forget your sun hat and water. They aren’t kidding about never having to cancel for rain during the summer season. Sunshades were up but there was still full sun on the sides. The food, drinks, and snacks (popsicles specifically) hit the spot on a warm, family-friendly matinee day (under 6 not allowed ordinarily). The crowd was decidedly older and someone had to be ambulanced for heat stroke, which was handled compassionately and did not stop the show. Restrooms and water fountains available at the entrance. Tickets more affordable for seniors and students. Parking is $5 or free if you drive four or more. Seat cushions available for rent or BYO. Coolers welcome. SCS also supports the schools with a discounted educational show in the fall.

It’s always worth attending Santa Cruz Shakespeare! The ground and side seating is excellent. Bring a blanket and jacket or gets chilly. People bring their own snacks, wine and beer can be purchased along with coffee and hot chocolate. I prefer a giant bag of popcorn and a few beverages. In true this-theater-is-outside-in-the-woods fashion, in the last performance a barn owl landed hooting on the backdrop. Watching theater under the stars among the trees is magical. Become a patron and get cool seat cushions & your name in the program!

Highly recommend Santa Cruz Shakespeare! Everyone should try make it to Shakespeare Santa Cruz every year. It brings talent and variations of Shakespearean plays with creative touches and twists. Location is good although nothing close to UCSC Glen. For matinee one needs hat and sunscreen etc. Food stalls are available offer simple yet tasty pretzels, drinks etc with a hefty price tag :)

The actors were great, the service people were super friendly, and the audience was quiet. How could I complain!? I saw King Lear with two companions, and I must say, I thought the man who played Edgar was great. He made Edgar my favourite character in this performance. Edmund was a great villain. Slimey and unrepentant. King Lear was a perfect balance between crazed and petulant. Regan and Goneril actually made me feel empathetic and disgusted, which was a strange combination, but totally amazing acting. The Duke of Gloucester lost his eyes (gross) but amazed me with his performance, and he made me respect this character even more. The Fool was adorable. The Knave was great as well. What can I say, this was a fabulous performance.

There is no gluten free or vegan food, except chips or popcorn without butter, and drinks. There's candy, charcuterie, nachos, soft pretzels, sandwiches, and so on. I was fine with chips and popcorn, except the concession girl assumed I didn't want any, "butter," because I'm skinny. (not that it's actually butter, I think, but, hey, I want fat, man). So just make sure you get there early and bring...

The City and residents should figure out a way to save this Santa Cruz institution... Shakespeare Santa Cruz brings artists and patrons from all over the world including luminaries like Patrick Stewart and many Bay Area Celebrities. Artistic excellence and a one-of-a-kind experience enjoying great theatre and the natural beauty of the campus' glen. This is short-sited of UCSC to discontinue support for this Internationally recognized theatre company. They should somehow solve the fiscal problems and discover a way to keep this BAY AREA TREASURE alive... both Boards of Directors should be held accountable and elected officials should get involved. This company, as respected and important as to the Bay Area ACT, Berkeley Rep, TheatreWorks and San Jose Rep, must be supported just as the OR Shakespeare Festival in Ashland or San Diego's Old Globe Theatre are... Certainly the Santa Cruz area has the resources (don't all kinds of celebrities have homes on Monterey Bay?)... Shakespeare Santa Cruz should re-organize and raise whatever funds necessary to preserve this...
