Frank Ortiz Park is a fantastic off-leash area that spans 138 acres, featuring beautiful arroyos, hills, and miles of trails with breathtaking views of Santa Fe. It serves as an excellent escape within the neighborhood, offering plenty of space for dogs to play and explore. To ensure safety for our pets, I recommend keeping dogs within the designated areas, especially considering the park's proximity to the highway and residential zones.
I take my dog to the park almost every Monday morning. It provides a perfect outlet for my dog's energy and serves as a refreshing break for me when I'm not up for longer hikes around Santa Fe.
One observation I’ve made is the diversity in attitudes among fellow dog owners. While many dogs enjoy socializing, some owners tend to be a bit reserved or unfriendly. It would be wonderful to see more openness and camaraderie among dog owners, as a welcoming attitude can greatly enhance everyone's experience at the park.
Despite these frequent interactions, the park's natural beauty always shines through, making each visit enjoyable. With numerous trails and seating areas available, there are endless adventures to embark on along the paths, and it's common for people to bring their own seats for added comfort. Overall, Frank Ortiz Park is a lovely place to connect with nature and enjoy quality time with our furry friends, even if there’s room for improvement in the human...

Really a lovely park with great trails that my dog and I have been enjoying for the last year. Everyone I've met involved in the park couldn't be nicer, and truly care about the space. Typically nice conversation with other dog owners for a nice little community.
Unfortunately, my experiences over the past few months have been with aggressive dogs in situations that one can usually handle, like fellow pups not taking cues when yours is tired, or dogs being territorial. It's expected and it happens, and everyone moves on with their day.
That is until this past weekend, when an aggressive dog ran up and bit mine in the side, with zero warning. "That's how he approaches other dogs," the owner said nonchalantly before moving on with her day. Unfortunately, the puncture wound was bad enough that we had to spend our Saturday afternoon at the emergency vet in Alamogordo getting our pup stitched up.
Mostly full of great people, but also idiots that need to gauge whether their aggressive dogs can handle the setting. Time for nice long break from the park.
Don't bring your dog if they can't handle being around other...
Read moreThis dog park is a huge off leash park. You will find lots of trails to explore for you and your dog! Mornings and afternoon crowds of dogs gather to play in the open area near the back parking lot. If you are more reclusive a walk in dry creek bed is nice encountering a few friends as they come and go. Don’t be deceived, this park is massive. Take time to explore. If you park near the playground you should follow the trails and walk, there is soooo much more you are missing if you stay near the children’s play area. The views of Santa Fe are amazing on the upper trails. The only reason I have not given 5 stars is due to irresponsible owners not cleaning up after their dogs. I completely understand not seeing your dog go if they are running off trail in the trees but the dog mess on the trails is just laziness. There are trash cans and waste bags in places...
