The hike down to this spot is long and very hot during the summertime. The California sun is hotter than a lot of the country so you'll need to be extra careful when exposing skin especially during the summer months. Bring some water and some snacks and take advantage of the sparse shaded spots to relax as it feels 20° cooler in the shade.
There are three ways to access flat rock: ‐------------------- Park at Torrey Pines State Beach and travel south along the beach until you reach flat rock. Park at the golf course and hike down flat rock trail.(Technically not allowed but they turn the blind eye to hundreds of people doing it every day) Park at Blacks Beach or La Jolla Shores beach and follow the beach north all the way to flat rock. Read moreFlat Rock is a beautiful beach absent of sand and full of polished and rounded, colorful stones. It is fairly shallow in depth but had a long strand that gives you plenty of room to spread out. On the South side is the flat rock area with a partial bowl carved by waves that you can follow around a bend then up over the rock. Descending to the beach from the upper parking lot takes about 20-30 minutes depending on your pace. There's a fairly significant elevation change but the trails are easy to navigate and the steepest parts include stairs so there are no difficult areas to walk. Because of the stairs, it wouldn't be possible to descend to the beach with a wheelchair. As for tide pools, Torrey Pines isn't really the place for that. Go to La Jolla instead.
