The Gemma Parks Interpretive Trail was super cool. This loop swings down toward the water & follows the southern edge of San Elijo Lagoon & eventually rises a slight bit in elevation, as it re-joins Solana Hills Trail, above.
What is so nice about this loop, is it's easy walking, & you'll be able to get up close to the waterfowl that live in this habitat.
I saw Northern Pintail Ducks, lots of American Coots, numerous American Widgeon Ducks, a Pied Billed Grebe, a Great Egret, a pair of Ospreys, flying toward the ocean, plus even a Northern Harrier- a bird of prey, which appeared from nowhere, like a ghost. It glided low along the shoreline, spooking the ducks.
I also saw a tiny Spring Azure Butterfly, working over a flower at the edge of this trail. They appear pale blue in color, mixed with a very subtle shade of lavender.

There are trash cans at the very beginning of the walk and there was a ranger hanging out which was...
Read moreNice easy walk that takes you to Annie’s slot canyon trail. Dogs allowed on leash but PLEASE, DON’T TAKE YIUR DOG THROUGH THE SLOT CANYON. It’s a one way trail that loops with a very thin ladder at the end. I went last week and there were at least 40 of us stuck in the slot canyon for about 15 minutes waiting for a lady who ignored all the signs and took her 40ish pound dog to get the dog up the ladder. VERY INCONSIDERATE. The walk to and fro is nice and easy and plenty of benches along the way to enjoy...
