we parked after the Campground in the day parking (fee 10 dollars) where we obtained info about the trail around the lake. We hiked to the left of the lake and reached the cafe at the other end (took about 2 hours) - this part of the trail is shady and some of it runs along a road so very easy. At the opposite end of the lake we explored Lily Lake a bit and the headed back on the opposite side of Fallen Leaf Lake. I wouldn't recommend this if you don't like a climb or uneven surfaces - after a while the trail levels out into a fire truck/jeep track/power line but it's not very nice walking (no shade and pine chipping surface which is hard to walk on after a while) We found it hard to locate any trail back down along the lake - there are no markers for a trail going along the lake which is a pity- and we did lose reception so it was hard to navigate. In truth we were lost but at least found a road at the end of the jeep track. it still took another hour to reach our car. So the hike took nearly 5 hours (21.5km) and was definitely hard going in the last 2! We would recommend walking in and back on the easy (left) side if you want to keep it simple. Still it's a very special place and it's really worth a visit....

Don't forget to get your wilderness permit from the...
