I’ve played at a lot of golf courses over the years, but South Park Golf Course has to be one of the absolute worst. From the moment I walked in, I could tell this was going to be a nightmare. The guy at the front desk was beyond rude — not just unfriendly, but downright hostile. I tried to ask a couple of simple questions about the course and the facilities, and he acted like I was bothering him. He barely looked up from his phone, mumbled his answers, and gave me the sense that he was doing me a huge favor by even acknowledging my presence. I honestly couldn’t believe it. For a place that’s supposed to welcome golfers, this guy had zero customer service skills, and it set the tone for everything that followed.
As for the course itself — where do I even begin? It’s clear that no one has put any effort into maintaining this place for a long time. The fairways were in horrible condition, patchy and uneven, with random dirt spots that looked like they hadn’t been watered in weeks. There was hardly any grass on some holes, and on others, the grass was so thick it felt like hitting through a jungle. It was frustrating to say the least. It wasn’t even fun; it was like trying to play through a poorly maintained backyard.
Then there were the greens. Oh boy. I’ve played on public courses with better greens, and I’ve played on public courses with worse. South Park’s greens were by far the worst I’ve ever encountered. They were slow, bumpy, and just plain weird. You couldn’t read them at all — putts would break in directions you’d never expect, and the ball would stop randomly in places you didn’t hit it. It was as if they hadn't been rolled or tended to in years.
I also couldn’t get over how uninspired the layout was. It felt like they just threw some random holes together without any thought to strategy or aesthetics. Some holes were straight and boring, others were awkwardly designed with no clear target areas, making it confusing to navigate. And don’t even get me started on the sand traps. If you end up in one, consider it a lost cause — the sand was more like hard-packed dirt, and some traps even had rocks and debris in them. You could hardly get a clean shot out of them. It’s almost as if they didn’t care enough to maintain any of the basic features of a golf course.
By the time I made it to the back nine, I was so over it. The frustration of dealing with poor course conditions, combined with the terrible attitude from the staff, made it hard to even enjoy the game. At one point, I seriously considered just leaving, but I figured I’d paid for the round, so I might as well finish.
I wish I had checked the reviews before booking my tee time, because I would have known to stay away. South Park Golf Course isn’t just disappointing — it’s a waste of time and money. For what they charge, you could play at any number of other courses in the area that are in far better shape with actual decent customer service. South Park doesn’t deserve your business, and it certainly doesn’t deserve to be in the same conversation as other local courses. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to play. There are plenty of better...
Read moreAugusta can't hold a torch to this place. Twelve-thousand yards (27 holes) of pure unadulterated pleasure to be had here. Built in 1928 by hard-working Americans on the property where the Whiskey Rebellion started, it has a classic feel with all the modern comforts a golfer loves. The clubhouse was built by talented Italian masons, and I've never seen brickwork like this in my life. The employees are friendly, helpful, and they'll happily give you a fresh towel if you ask for one. The grass seed mix (Pennsylvania Bluegrass) was developed by Penn State university experts with Pittsburgh's unique climate in mind. The greens roll at consistent speed, and the layout is challenging. The restaurant in the western portion of the clubhouse serves world-class food and has a fine selection of beer and other beverages. The landscaping is impeccable, and the view of the distant rolling hills from the patio is breathtaking. As far as I've researched, the prices here unbeatable compared to surrounding courses given the quality of play here. Moreover, it's at an incredibly convenient location for nearby suburbs, and it's an easy drive from Pittsburgh. It's a great course for the serious golfer, the hacker, and the guy just trying to squeeze a round in after work. There's a variety of men's and women's leagues, including other private leagues if you're looking for friends to play with. A host of public and private tournaments and outings are available, and the competition is minimal. Seriously lol I won thousands of dollars hustling baby-boomers here last year. Scrubs. Anyways, five stars is an understatement. South Park Golf...
Read moreSouthpark golf course is was it is; a public county course that has a ton of play from all levels of golfers. And a decent value at $29 with a cart during the week. I will only golf there during the week for this value. Last year, and early this year you could always count on the greens being very playable, no matter that the fairways and tee boxes leave a little to be desired, especially later in the season. I would prefer to see a course marshall or two reminding high handicappers to move it along and fix more ball marks on the greens. The greens are at a point that it may be too late to recover this year, aerate now! The greens were in the worst shape I’ve seen in the last two years. Tee boxes could use a tee disposal on each as there are broken tees everywhere now due to the grounds being so hard. It’s also the responsibility of the golfers to fix your own ball marks, and maybe another, just for the good of everyone. It’s not that much to ask to fix two ball marks while you’re waiting to putt. Help us all, please! The guys at the first tee are always willing to rush you off, but I’ve never seen a Marshall on the course moving things along. It’s gonna be a 4.5 to 5 hour round for sure, expect that. But they’re losing the best aspect of the...
