Well I survived the spring hike at Nixon park. What an enjoyable experience it was. I am really glad to rsvp to participate in the first of any hikes for this season. I had really debated about going since the weather looked threatening. I Was thinking I really shouldn’t be out on slippery trails in the forest. But since I had made a reservation. I thought I should at show up and let them know I am going to cancel my reservation and the receptionist at the front desk was very understanding. And said I may cancel and show up next Sunday same time. Well it’s been years since I had visited Nixon park nature center. So I thought I would just enjoy my visit. So the guide said we will be meeting outside and going to proceed with the hike. The weather held off for the entire hike. It lasted a good hour. We did cover a good of ground. I have found the trails to be well maintained and safe. However we did stop many times to listen to our guide. I must say it was very much enjoyable learning experience. I am glad I went. I would guess there were a good 20 adults and maybe ten small children. In which our guide was Tyler Wilt. He spoke very clear easy to understand. Also he had the children very much engaged in the hike. I thought he spoke to the children very well and didn’t talk down to them. I would highly recommend if you’re interested to sign up for a hike. As We did see a lot of wild Life and spring time plants. Most wore good sturdy shoes for the hike. It was a good day to be in the forest. I was surprised the turtles are active already at the pond area. Our hike ended at the nature center. You know we are so fortunate to have our county parks so close to us and they are well taken care of. They are one of York Counties hidden treasures. Thank you to York County Parks and Tyler Wilt. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Until we meet again. Be safe and...
Read moreNixon Park is an excellent source for family fun and learning about the nature around us.
Nixon has trails to walk that include easy through moderate hikes. The trails take you through many different natural surroundings, such as a grassy meadow, a hardwood forest, and rocky mineral rich terrain. In the quiet of the trails you can hear many different bird songs, watch white tailed deer cross your path and even bump into the occasional box turtle.
Nixon also boasts a first class indoor exhibit hall containing hands on learning and fun for children, bird watching, bee watching, as well as a myriad museum of beasties of every type from all across the world. The center also had clean restrooms and Koala changing stations for families with little ones.
Nixon has a well thought out learning trail close to its Indoor Center where the children can get up close and personal with geology, biology, and botany in the fresh air while maintaining a guided feel to the trail. This area also has a small amphitheater like setup right next to an active brook.
Another user here gave the park low marks for its lack of uninformed staff. With respect, I disagree with the low marks for that reason. The park is largely staffed by volunteers who are there because they want to be a part of the experience. A lot of the volunteers are also young people who aren't going to have many answers.
In conclusion, what the park lacks in authoritative workers it more than makes up for in their zeal, their desire to be a help, and the shear beauty and number of offerings within its boundaries.

Read moreThis is a hidden treasure! The museum has the most full-size animals I've ever seen! There are various local species of every imaginable creature, from creapy crawlies to bears. Additionally, they've gone far and beyond what you'd expect to see in our region, or even in our state! In fact, you can see nature in various shapes and sizes from all over the world! I love that there is a lot of "touch me" exhibits through out the museum. My favorite was the vertebrae of a prehistoric creature that lived here in York County. I had been to the outdoor portion of the park a number of years ago and certainly recommend it for a lovely day trip for families and individuals. There are paved walkways throughout the park. But for anyone who enjoys learning about the creatures all about us, I highly recommend a visit to the museum. Both children and adults will find it a educational and very enjoyable experience. I suggest if you haven't been to the museum since you were in school, that you take some time out of your schedule to return for a visit to the...
