Big Pine Key Flea Market — Attraction in Stock Island

I have been going to this market for years, as do many of my friends and neighbors. It is packed full of interesting vendors...clothing, fishing, jewelry, RV supplies, art work, stonework, quirky collectible, and fresh vegetables. Entry is free! Loads of free parking, and local law enforcement presence.

It has limited food and drink options, but there is a shaded pavilion to eat in, or take a break out of the sun. Do try the mini donut hut while there...it's tradition and still the best snack value!

Disability parking is plentiful, however, people with disabilities should be aware that the terrain is packed dirt and gravel. With a mobility scooter it is easy going, but for those with walking challenges or using a cane...beware. Also, the parking lots have many potholes and present a hazard to all. There are restrooms and a family/handicap-accessible restroom...none too clean in the middle of Saturday afternoon.

I started going to Vista Linda with my Dad many years ago. He was an outdoor writer with a TV & Radio show, & would interview people all over, especially anywhere close to fish. He interviewed the folks that started the Big Pine Key Flea Market. He advertised in Tennessee for them for years till he passed away. You could always find good piles of fishing related stuff, that was designed for saltwater fishing. I bought an old guitar there on a trip when I had left my guitar at home. 'Bought UT from a feller with no arms. You know, that feller rolled a cigarette with his toes, tighter than I could with my hands & stuck it in his mouth & lit it! You can build memories there, buy other peoples junk that is a treasure to you & save a ton of money if you're from out of town, down...

The big pine flea market is located right at ground zero where hurricane Irma hit. It's amazing to be a part of such a wonderful, resilient group of people. The market is up and running full speed and everyone is helping everyone. Fund raising groups are serving free breakfasts and BBQ lunches. Seems like every kid on Big Pine has a new bicycle or basketball hoop and school supplies thanks to kind donations. It certainly cheers them up while living in a travel trailer in thier yard waiting for a new roof for the house. The market itself is full of vendors who lost everything and rebuilt better and stronger. Many of the things sold here just can't be bought easily anywhere else in the keys. I really like being a part of such a happy group of people who work...
