We only saw the campground and the hiking trails near the campground. Seems like a pretty nice campground, we stayed in late March, so kind of hard to get a feel for how it would be when busy. There is a pool (not currently open, of course) and at least 2 laundromats in the campground, and beach volleyball, horseshoes and basketball courts, a sandy beach, and also canals with places to dock small boats (both what they call courtesy docks, which I imagine are just first come first serve, as well as a "boat camping" area which has power at the dock, but I think the idea is that it's for RVs hauling small boats... the docks are too short to be for boats which you could stay aboard...). The campground has free wifi all throughout (I'm sure when it's busy it's probably hard to get on the network) and I had excellent coverage with T-Mobile. There are some very easy hiking trails off of the A loop as well as a "BMX track" (I've never done BMX biking, but looking at the track, I'm pretty sure it would only be a challenge for youngish kids...), Over in the D area there is a building for boat and bike rental (not currently open). There are also a lot of small playgrounds all over the campground which would probably be fun for families with small kids to check out the different playgrounds. A couple of negatives: the campground signage is TERRIBLE (I'm talking about the signs with sections of site numbers). It's possible that when it's more busy, they have someone at the entrance giving out maps and highlighting the route you should take, but there was no one there when we came at 3 o'clock on a Saturday in late March, and just depending on the signs brought us to the campsite facing the wrong way to back in, so we had to go past it, turn around and come back. Most campgrounds do one-way loops so everyone approaches the right way, but the roads here are all two-way, with the sites on opposite sides of the road oriented differently... A lot of soft wet ground, but not sure if that's only a problem in spring or if it happens any time after it rains...(we camped in the A loop, and there aren't many trees here and a lot of drainage ditches so I suspect the water might be an issue year round, but B area has lots of trees that might drink up any water). Also, the trash dumpsters are OVERFLOWING. The campground is closing later this week to repave everything for a couple months, so maybe they scheduled a trash/dumpster pick up right before or something, but it's just kind of gross and unattractive right now. Also, most of the paved pads are pretty narrow (we are stepping out onto mud and the wheels on both sides are pretty close to the edge of the pavement. ) But, this could potentially be solved if they make them wider when they repave this spring/summer). One last minor complaint is that the website talks about there being a 3.5 mile paved multi-use trail, but the thing that's not obvious is that this state park is broken up into sections with private land separating them, and so the only way to get from the campground to the multi-use trail is by a fairly busy road with no sidewalk and a narrow shoulder. So if you have a motorhome without a separate vehicle you're kind of stuck at just the campground section. I would definitely like to come here again when it's warmer to...
Read moreVery crowded. People don't like to move out of the way while you're driving. Rules aren't enforced. We had to listen to horns honking, people yelling gross stories about private body parts across the way, kids in ours and other sites with flashlights and screaming at each other til 2 am. We had to chase the kids out of our sites a few times. One group of drunk adults at the bathroom calling people they don't know out of their name, Called the ODNR number to ask for help getting some of these issues resolved as these were mostly drunk people, no help there. The campground itself is very clean. Bathrooms were pretty clean for a public place, but only one shower house for the whole camp. Lots of children's activities and tons of kids through the campground. Spots are large but on top of each other. Our neighbors had to ask if we were even in the right zone because they're on top of each other. Geese are an issue so lots of poop on the sites. It seemed like a lot of people enjoyed the water way in various ways. Fire pits do not have grates to cook on so bring a grate or grill with you. I also suggest you bring your own firewood as it's expensive at a few places and you cannot cut your own on site, there really isn't any to cut anyway. There are picnic tables at your site. They have a volleyball pit which they said was recently put in, a dog run area, a beach, snack house, nice pool, playground areas, a gaga-ball pit, canoe rentals. Staff was very friendly and helpful when asked a direct question outside of calling ODNR. Staff is also only available during business hours. We did get good phone reception. It did feel like an overall safe place. Just wasn't really an enjoyable time for my family though so we won't be returning ourselves. Happy...
Read moreI always liked coming to this state park and camping here but my recent stay was a little less than desired. I stayed in the A section where there was a whole group of geese wandering all over the campsite leaving droppings all over the campsite, but not just on the campsite all over the road and I noticed it was covering the entire beach and boat ramp area. Another thing I noticed, or didn't notice, was the lack of authority in the park. I was there from Thursday to Sunday and didn't see a single park ranger or officer of any type drive through. I also noticed one morning while going for a walk with my dog that is on a leash the lax in the leash law around the park. Dogs would come right up to you out of their campsite and try to mess with either you or your dog. We would tell the owner that they need to put a leash on their dog but it doesn't do any good. The last thing I noticed was there is plenty of 10 MPH speed signs posted but there are also plenty of people going well over the 10 MPH speed limit! With all the kids and people walking/biking around you think they would slow it down a bit.
I would like to see the park install some sidewalks or walk ways or something so that you aren't walking on the already crowded, narrow driveways throughout the park. I think it would be much safer if they had a separate place for foot traffic to use instead of the edge of the road and hoping that the...
