While the mountain itself and subsequent quarry areas can be a bit unforgiving to the casual hiker (I'll go into detail on this a bit later), the wooded trails here are so rewarding to traverse. I've never seen such a menagerie of diverse wildlife in one place outside of a nature preserve! My husband and I have come here on four different occasions- six if you also consider the surrounding farmland, and on the last visit alone we were able to identify the following: white tail deer, eastern cottontail, turkey vulture (picture included [sorry for the quality]), northern mockingbird, cardinal, eastern American toad, Carolina anole, southeastern five-lined skink, eastern fence lizard, southern black racer, water moccasin, and what looked a lot like a black slimy salamander. That's ONLY the ones we think we were able to identify! We also saw numerous fish, birds, amphibians, insects, and tadpoles, and one frog we didn't get a great look at and this were unable to identify. My husband thinks he saw a beaver as well, but I didn't get a chance to verify that unfortunately.
The mountainside is beautiful, but many of its trees which were already few and far between have been devastated by mountain pine beetles. The lack of cover as a result of this can be very daunting, particularly in the summer when the unforgiving Georgia sun and unpredictable rains will both beat down on a traveler leaving them nowhere to shelter. If you come on a day when the weather is more pleasant you'll be treated to the scenic painted faces of one of this state's three inselburgs, and if you care to explore you can learn a lot about the history of the quarry and surrounding areas. There are many fine trails to walk a dog on, and if you're so inclined this is a nice place for novices to geocache. Just make sure you bring water and sunscreen, and don't deviate too far off the marked paths because it's very easy...
