This is a very interesting nature preserve. I went midday and the office was open. The staff person inside was very informative. I really enjoyed talking to him. They have events on the weekend. Either go to the website or see the pictures. I saw several people walking dogs, using the paved path ways. I explored the soft trails which at times were particularly strenuous. The soft trails are not wheelchair friendly area nor is it stroller friendly. Pay attention to the markers on the trees and you won’t get lost. Do not pay attention to any colored ribbons dangling from the trees they will confuse you. I saw a good amount of wildlife. There were a lot of song birds. I also saw a hawk. Make sure you bring at least two bottles of water per person. The trees create a natural canopy so I walked in shade. It was bearable. Make sure your phone is charged, use sunscreen and bug spray. I saw a lot of white Georgia marble that I believe may have come from here and used to build some of the buildings that I’ve visited in Georgia. I’m not a historian and I really don’t know what the quarry produced. If you walk the soft trails you’ll see...
Read morePlenty of parking, paved paths for walking and biking. I parked here to hike the mountain 2.5 miles each way. Take the paved path to the left, cross the road at crossing and follow the boardwalk to the AWARE Wildlife Center (has parking but filled quickly) cool points for the water bottle filling station. I climbed straight path, came down the opposite side and followed the blue path along the lake. Bring and drink plenty of water. Should try to do an early or evening hike, you will hurt if you choose middle of the day. Please keep this place clean for...
Read moreMy favorite metro-area outdoors spot. Familiarize yourself with the trails before you go so you know what paths to follow. My favorite things: all trails around the mountain are marked! The lake trail is my favorite, but you can link up multiples if you want a longer hike (I have small children-the longest we go is the lake trail). Extremely biodiverse. Options away from the main hikes for busy days. Consider me a diehard. I will be hiking here until I...
