Buford Dam Beach — Attraction in Sugar Hill

A few years ago this was the best beach on the south end of the lake in my opinion, however my recent visit was very disappointing. High water has compacted the previously fluffy white sand and has taken over a lot of the beach sand area. On top of that, Canadian geese and vultures were everywhere and the whole area smelled like bird poop. I want to think that the dark particles I saw floating over the top of the sand in the shallow water was algae, but I fear it may be more bird poop since the smell is so strong especially in the heat. Watch where you're walking on the sand on the way to the water so not to step in the poop, but once out in the water the smell isn't too bad. I hope something will be done to discourage these birds soon. This beach is one of the better local beaches. It does get a bit crowded, but our family got there earlier in the day before the big crowds got there around 2-3PM. Yhe beach itself is fairly small, but definitely nice. It attracts people from all different backgrounds and walks of life, so it's nice to see that's its culturally diverse.

There are places to barbeque and shady areas off the beach to hang out and picnic. The swimming area in the Lake goes out deep enough for you to not be able to stand, which is great for a lake beach as you dont always see that, but you definitely have to watch small children. I was shocked by how poorly managed this park has become. The entire place was filled with the stench of barbecue smoke from unauthorized grills, making my eyes sting and breathing uncomfortable. Loud music with heavy bass was blasting from multiple groups, making it feel chaotic rather than a peaceful natural park.

Despite the “No Pets” policy, many people brought pets, and there were open alcohol parties around grills. It’s really disappointing for those who come to enjoy nature in peace. This place used to be like Buford Dam Park I knew and loved, but now it feels completely different.
