This trailhead has lots of parking and there is a second lot just down hill on the same side of the road. Saturday morning the main lot was full by 7:00. I’m told that if both lots are full you can take your chances by parking along the Highway. Not sure if that’s legal though. Lost one point because there is no restroom at the trailhead, which surprised me given the popularity. Also, there are other trailheads on Mt Charleston that have flushing out Vault toilets.

The area is beautiful to hike in if you like steep and rocky trails! Bring plenty of water as portions of the trail get full on sun, especially in the afternoon. 5 stars !

There are lots of folks with dogs. Most dogs we saw were well mannered; one was not well controlled. Most dogs were not on leash, even though leashes are required. Lost a point for that. Needs some enforcement. Obviously the area is short on rangers; funding problems I think.

Fortunately, the area is mostly free from litter, which is somewhat surprising, considering the popularity of the trail and how lazy folks can be. Saw one TP wad adjacent to the trail!...

In A Nutshell:

-The North Loop Trailhead is very easy to get to. -Located right off Deer Creek Road, you should be able to find a parking spot, but spots are limited. -Most people only do the 4 mile loop, which is the North Loop Trail to the Wild Horse Canyon trail or vice versa. -It's not a difficult trail, but you will experience some elevation gains. -The trail is mostly sheltered from the sun, I would say about 65% shade. -There are many trees in the 8,000+ elevation range to include ponderosa pine, white fir, limber pines & the longest living trees in the world, the bristlecone pine trees. -Even in mid-August you should spot a small stream of running water along the Wild Horse Canyon trail, which is very cool to see.

Overall, this trail system will break off into other trails so you can choose your own adventure in this...

A great and well maintained trail with great scenery in southern Nevada. This trail is long if you plan on traversing from the trail head to the summit but there are several other spots or milestones to stop along the way if you don’t have that kind of time. Seeing the wreckage from the crash in the 1960s above the tree line is sobering (I work in aerospace, so hits a little different). The terrain is not difficult in my opinion at all. A little steep in some sections but nothing really challenging for any semi-experienced hiker. Definitely recommend taking on this hike for anyone wanting to...

This is absolutely a five star hike. We only did five miles due to time constrains but will come back earlier to make our way to either mummy springs or Fletchers Peak. The hike is straight up the ridge making it one of the harder hikes, especially in winter. We wore spikes which helped a lot. There were snow shoe tracks as well and those would have helped in spots but the trail has been traversed well enough that if you follow the path the snow is packed well enough to hike without sinking to your knees with every step. The scenery is well worth the trek.

This is a very busy trail head we arrived at 6am on Saturday and it was 90% full. From here you can take several of the more difficult hikes on the mountain. You can take it to Mount Charleston, the rain tree, mummy springs and more. We've done Mummy Springs and hiked to Rain Tree. Both are very difficult hikes due to the elevation change and the amount of miles round-trip. But they are both worth it and amazing. Mummy Springs is best in the early spring, otherwise it will be a small trickle on a wet rock in summer.
