Really beautiful. The CCC road leading to the trailhead is a dirt road which had a few muddy and rutted spots so it is best travelled with a high-clearance vehicle. There is a nice pavilion at the trailhead to rest and prepare for your hike-camping there is not permitted but there are designated campsites including a shelter near Weogufka creek and rustic cabins that were built by the CCC. They do not have running water. Alcohol is not allowed. There were port-o-lets near the cabins. A friendly full time caretaker is on site at the cabin area in the Ranger’s cabin. Campers can park their cars in an area near the cabins and the caretaker will keep an eye on them. The trails are steep and rocky at times-a hiking pole is recommended. At the time I went the tower was not accessible to the public but a pavilion beneath it provided welcome shelter from the wind on a chilly day. Local scouts from Alexander City were camping...
Read moreThis will be a detailed review. We started the pinhoti trail and went 7.8 miles to county road 56 . This is the best marked trail I've ever hiked with two sign in books along the way and a nice new shelter. There are a few benches along the trail as well as some monuments marking the trail. The trail had several steep climbs and two wash out areas that were difficult. Toward the end of the trail loggers destroyed the route with heavy equipment which made it hard to finish. Overall the trail was awesome. You will arrive at the tower roughly 2 miles after you start. You will also pass by the cabins and the common area which are cool. We meet the trail keepers who's trail names are Chuck Norris and Tigger. Great people who offered us drinks and a lot of useful info. They are serious hikers with the Appalachian trail already under there belt. Bring plenty of water. The trail doesn't get near the creek much at...
Read moreDid a 20 mile backpacking trip over the last weekend of April. Weather was great. Don’t let the hills fool you! Trail was marked pretty good in most places. Parts of it were sketchy. Stealth camping is pretty much what your going to be doing. A couple of great spots to do so. One around mile 11 Oslo gets a beautiful Creek in a gorge right a couple miles past Capertons. Another beautiful spot around mile 16.2. It actually had a fire ring and...
