We were transported yesterday to Napa and Sonoma by visiting the Meadowbrook Winery in Oldwick, NJ and doing their Premium tasting. The tasting room has a sublime, minimalist look and feel with an elevated attention to detail in their choice of the furniture, glassware, dishes, the lighting at the bar and spectacular wall mural. The room is beautiful but it is letting the 20 foot floor to ceiling windows (overlooking the vineyard) and the wine do all the talking. Tranquil and sophisticated is the perfect description. We started the tasting with their sparkling wine to cleanse the palate and then moved on to whites. I loved the Albarino, Chardonnay and Chardonnay reserve. It was interesting to compare and contrast the three with the help of the gracious winemaker, Conor Quilty. He explained in detail how all were produced and aged. The tasting included a charcuterie platter and fresh baked focaccia all sourced from local farmers and bakers in the area-outstanding!! So nice to see local businesses support each other. After that we moved on to the reds with the grand finale being the Governor’s Cup award winner for best red wine in NJ, the Reserve Cab Franc. It is full bodied and lush and deserves all the accolades it has received. Read moreThe bucolic setting is serene and exceptionally scenic, the staff was friendly and attentive, the tasting building was thoughtfully laid out and with nice minimalist details, the locally sourced food accompaniments were delicious, so why the 3? Simply put, while I have realistic expectations of what NJ wine can be, 3 of the 7 wines served were simply undrinkable and we poured them out upon sampling. It’s ok to have individualized palates and preferences which I can appreciate, I have many times simply said “that’s not for me” or something similar but it’s something entirely else when the response on 3 wines, let alone 1, is “that’s...
