I recently took my kids on a hike at Canyon Lake Gorge, and we had an absolutely fantastic time! This hidden gem is perfect for a family outing, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a short and sweet adventure.
First and foremost, make sure to bring plenty of water, especially if you're hiking during the summer months. The Texas heat can be intense, but with water in hand, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy the trail to its fullest.
What made our experience even more memorable was the scavenger hunt they had set up for the kids. It added an extra element of excitement and engagement, keeping their spirits high throughout the hike. They had a blast searching for clues and discovering hidden treasures along the way.
The price of admission was more than reasonable, with a cost of just $5 for anyone aged 12 and older. Considering the quality of the experience and the efforts put into maintaining the trail, it's an absolute steal.
The trail itself is awe-inspiring, with breathtaking views of the gorge and surrounding natural beauty. The geological formations are truly a sight to behold, and the educational signs along the path provide valuable insights into the area's history.
The staff and guides at Canyon Lake Gorge were friendly, knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure that our visit was enjoyable. They were more than happy to answer our questions and share fascinating facts about the gorge and its ecosystem.
If you're looking for an adventure that combines fun, education, and natural beauty, Canyon Lake Gorge is the place to be. It's an incredible experience for both kids and adults, and I can't recommend it enough. Make sure to add it to your family's must-visit list!
So, grab your hiking gear, bring plenty of water, and get ready for an unforgettable journey through Canyon Lake Gorge. You won't be...

HIKE: We did the self-guided hike since we had a child under 7 with us, this review is for that portion. (There are other guided hikes that are more strenuous that are available.)
This one mile both ways out-and-back hike was about 30% shaded in the summer. It was hot but had lots of photo op areas and stopping points with benches and picnic tables.
It was the best labeled trail I have ever hiked, with yellow markers about 100 yards or so. You absolutely won't get lost! Trail is well maintained- some with natural cedar mulch or gravel, with some slipping hazards if you aren't watching your steps. (This is not a wheelchair friendly hike.)
KIDS: Our 6 and 8 year old enjoyed the hike, did not fall or complain about the length of the hike. (Make sure to ask for the adventure kit/backpacks to borrow from the visitor's center! They have binoculars, a compass, and a scavenger hunt to help kids have something to do!)
BATHROOMS: fancier port-a-potties at the visitor center, AND a bathroom at the end of the trail in case you need it before returning! That is a nice luxury you don't see on most trails.
STAFF was all helpful and knowledgeable, and they showed us fossils found around the area and made sure we were...
Read morewe did the 1.5 hour tour today with Joe... WOW what an experience! There's so much to learn and take in! Geology, Dinosaurs, the history of the area 100+ million years ago, how a major flood in 2002 changed the area forever and the DRAMATIC impact it had! There's fossils to see and discover.
Then there's Joe! You can tell he really enjoys his job. He's funny.. or should I say Punny! 😅 He's just a pleasure. He was a huge part of what made this tour great! The whole staff here was nice too. The 1.5 hrs literally flies by!
make sure to wear comfortable shoes preferably that are for hiking /trekking, bring a water jug that's insulated and keeps your drinks cool. At the front office they have a water refill station that dispenses cool water and it's purified and free! Along with some nice clean little bathrooms.
We are coming back in the fall and with family! Thank you again Joe and for everyone one there for making this such a...
