I saw the Statue of Liberty in a field by the river as I drove by on Rt. 36 and had to stop in for a visit. Lighthouse Island is a very large flat park at the convergence of Tionesta Creek and the Allegheny River. The Sherman family spent a lot of money putting up a four story lighthouse-which unfortunately wasn't open when I was there. In the middle of the park is a large replica of the Statue of Liberty on top of a very well built pile of stones. A nice crushed gravel path runs around the perimeter of the park on which many people were jogging or walking their dogs. There was an informative historical marker about the dams that they had built so they could float logs to their lumber mills. I am still wondering why there was a lighthouse on a river or why they built a beautiful replica of the Statue of Liberty on an island in the middle of the Allegheny National Forest. If you want to stretch your legs, enjoy beautiful views of the Allegheny River as it slides slowly by then you need to check out this park.

This isn't the largest park around, but is a great place for a quiet walk walk in Tionesta. There is a one mile waking path with only slight inclines, either at the beginning or end, depending on where you start. It is certainly conducive to a stroller or wagon or even a wheel chair. The path of the island traces it's perimeter providing many views both of Tionesta Creek, the Allegheny River, and their intersection. The lighthouse is neat and there are some signs describing it's origin and purpose. During select weekends and by appointment, the Lions Club hosts self guided tours to climb to the top and explore the construction photos as well as lighthouse displays and information from the Sherman Family.

Very nice grounds, there is a trail that takes you around the whole island. Great places to see the nearby Allegheny River. The lighthouse itself is also nice but if you want to climb it there are very few days during the year that you can.

Such an odd place, Sherman lighthouse, but it was a delightful visit at the end of the day for us. Nice small hiking trail to a real lighthouse (unclear why exactly at this point of the Allegheny river), surrounded with a freedom bell, chapel, gazebo, memorial and even a miniature statue of liberty..this is a fun little hike with odd combination of faux animal sculptures. It would be neat if the landscaped lawn turns into a visiting artist gallery for sculpture! Nice place to...
