We visited on a Monday in mid-April 2025.
We were here pretty early in the morning within an hour of the park opening. We came ALL the way from Cleveland on our road trip just to see these hippos for my youngest.
My youngest was so excited (he was holding his two hippo stuffies) standing there eagerly looking over the fenced enclosure looking for the hippos. Luckily one of the keepers noticed and saw him standing there by his lonesome trying to find these hippos clutching his stuffies. He shouts, "I got you, just give me like 5 mins." as he proceeds back into the enclosure house. You can see the hippos through the windows there but it's super dark and kind of dirty with hippo poop.
The keeper lays out a bunch of fruit all the way from the house down to their watering hole. He then opens the gates and the hippos one by one come trotting out gobbling up the fruits walking directly in front of us by the fence down to their watering hole. My kiddo was going crazy, I'm hoping it's a core memory. The hippo gets into the water bobbing for apples and then going over a quarter of a watermelon the keep also threw in.
The glass where the watering hole was super clean and clear. We watched the hippos hopping and swimming around trying to catch the fruit bobbing in the water. Then one hippo just rests it's entire face against the glasses seemingly posing for pictures. We couldn't have had a better experience here.
The elephants were next on the trail and they were fun but very far away. Luckily the baby was laying down right by the fence and we all got pictures of it. The elephant house itself was empty because they were all outside. But it did have naked mole rats inside.
The saddest thing was the absence of the rhinos. Not sure if they were not on display or what but there was no sign of them when we walked by.
We would probably stop by again just to see the hippos. My youngest in...
