Smiths point, that's the place I'm talking about. I just came back, I paid $18 to swim between two lifeguards about 50 to 75 yards apart maybe a hundred. It was about to rain and the place was just absolutely horrible. There were Corona bottle caps as far as the eye can see. My kid almost cut her feet wide open on one of them. I came here as a kid, this beach in the olden days was long, beautiful, and a fun place to bring your children but it has fallen in my eyes into decay. When I say decay I don't mean so much the memorial that's very nice, it's the beach itself. It's dirty, no place to bring a child under the age of 18 and I'll never go back again what a shame I used to brag about that place. Now the beach has this weird cliff and if you go beyond it you're pretty much dead so forget about the wading pools there are none. My review of the place not so good especially for $18 to park. I could have gotten a green pass, but I'm never coming back I'm done with that Beach. Sorry to disappoint you but if you like insane waves that will rip you out into the current and kill you that's the place to be! Hope my review was helpful to anyone that's choosing that has a beach too...
Read moreAlways feel weird saying I "like" a place like this... It's not about liking or not: That's an inappropriate scale and context. It is moving, and in a gentle but powerful way. Given the ever changing environ, with the sea right there, the dunes shifting around it, the memorial is, at once, both defiant and integrated. Really, Well Done: It captures both permanence and ephemera, the structured here & now and the organic and ever changing. I'm not sure if that's how it was designed/invoked, or if that's simply a consequence of its siting in this ever-changing barrier island biom: I do think it's terribly fitting, and in a particular way that many other monuments and memorials miss: Terrible loss, but in a larger context. I appreciate that it is part of why one comes here, not all of why; regardless of what initiated the visit, that is what one feels by the time of leaving: Memory given context,...
