The Albany Rural Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Menands, NY. The cemetery is the resting place of many important politicians and historical figures including President Chester A. Arthur, Stephen Van Rensselaer, Erastus Corning, William Paterson, and Daniel Manning. The cemetery is noted for its landscape design and well crafted mausoleums, headstones, and memorials. It is possible to both walk, hike, bike, or drive through the cemetery. There are maps available to help find the list of notable people who are buried here. Despite the fact that there is a map, certain memorials and graves can be hard to find. The “sectioning” system that is used here can be confusing. Probably, the most visited grave in the cemetery is that of former President Chester A Arthur. It is easy to find the signs that direct you towards his grave. The gravesite itself is one that stands out in the cemetery and is befitting of a former president. Some parts of the cemetery are much better maintained than others. The staff was helpful and friendly in answering any questions. Before coming here make sure to get a map from the cemetery’s website. Overall, it is a historic cemetery that is...

My brother had a stroke at 50 that changed his life.He also had 2 bits of cancer(2 different types) and was bedridden his last 4 1/2 years. We discussed all of this.I will say one last thing of which I am serious about...If you damage this grave again and do nothing to fix it I am going to press charges. In NYS it is against the law to desecration a grave...this includes...
Read moreAlbany Rural Cemetery is a very peaceful place to visit. The cemetery is well cared for and amazingly they continuously in the process of repairing the deteriorating stones. Each season brings a special treat to those who visit with blooming flowers, birds, and trees in full dress. I n the Autumn the trees put on a show and decorate the tombstone in reds, yellows, oranges, and greens. In the winter everything is decorated in white. In the spring once again flower buds, green grass begins to cover the ground once again, bees begin to hum, and birds sing in the trees. Amongst death life abounds. If you get a chance, I would recommend stopping by the cemetery, take a walk around, read the tombstones, and visit the waterfalls and wooded trails. They would welcome donations, I am sure, to repair those civil war stones that have seen...
