You DO NOT have to pay the 20$ 'donation'. Please know your rights, and you can pay a smaller fee for the maintenance of the property or simply ignore the two old ladies, as this is a PUBLIC SPACE. It's a voluntary donation and NOT A FEE. The two old ladies are playing on your guilty conscience, and it is Extortion and Coercion. I have filed a formal complaint.
Edit: @MTHS, I cannot believe I need to explain the definition of donation. We tried to pay less; however, the ladies coerced four of our cars to pay $80, which is NOT VOLUNTARY. If this is a private parking lot, please put up a sign saying so, NOT a temporary banner that you remove after 2pm. You CANNOT collect money under false pretences, which is illegal. You should be receiving a copy of the...
Read moreJust went here to go for a hike and visit the historical society. They wanted $20 to park! Asked if the historical society is open...nope, the only people working are collecting money. Asked her when it is open since they have about 50 cars parked in their lot their should be plenty of funds available. She said she didn't know and then inferred it's not really open to the public on the weekends and said "maybe during the week kind of thing". Very disappointed...we paid our $20 to go for a hike but to charge that type of money for a closed building is very scammed and is a terrible look for the town. If someone in town reads this they ought to have a chat with them it makes your town look very scammy to visitors. Will hike elsewhere in...
Read moreWe visited last week to hike to Kaaterskill and pulled into the parking lot near the historical society. The society itself was closed, but in the middle of the lot — not even near the building — there were people with handwritten pamphlets claiming they were collecting donations for the society. They asked for a $20 “donation” to park or access the trail. It felt sketchy and untrustworthy. We left and followed the official signs to Kaaterskill, where we found free, clearly marked parking. Would not recommend starting...
