5 mile round trip. $22 midweek Took us 3 hours RT with lots of breaks and to the top of Tower, etc. Finally, a tower I could climb!! A little under 2 miles on wide crushed stone path through woods from very large parking area (with nice BR and $1.50 vending machines) to Mohonk House(2nd BR in Art House) where the Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze (Crevice) begins. Yes, you can bail from rock scramble at a few spots and hike back along lake to Skytop walking path(that is what makes this an EASY hike). I am afraid of heights and tight spaces with large drops. This was not EASY and a bit of challenge for me. Went two days after rain and the Crevice was still dripping and wet so my boots were slippery up final 5 ladders. First set of ladders in Crevice are 30 steps. 2nd set of ladders are narrower and a bit crooked with a last squeeze that requires creative foot and hand grips to push out to rock ledge and first amazing vista. And yes, you can bail on the crevice. Take a set of wooden stairs to Skytop Tower. Maybe 15-20 ladder sets in all with some wooden foot ledges and bridges too. Rock scramble along the side of the mountain was fun and the views and boulders were amazing. Very well marked with red arrows. Some newly painted this week(July 2019). The climb between and under boulders with drop offs into a dark crevices at beginning of hike freaked me out. Other people in my group loved it! To skip this part, you can maybe walk farther down the path along the lake to find a 2nd or 3rd entrance...
Read moreA challenging rock scramble! So worth it! Best done with group of friends. Definitely a must when visiting Mohonk Mountain. The views are gorgeous all year round, but Autumn (October) is my favorite to take a romantic hike and enjoy the breathtaking views. Enjoy a scenic boat ride on the lake, to get a different perspective. Then, proceed to downtown New Paltz for some well deserved nourishment after a long an eventful day. Note: If attempting the lemon squeeze be prepared to be challenged on the ascent. Also, it is a good idea to attempt if in good shape. There is no turning back, some people have gotten stuck and have had to rely on other climbers to pull them up. Kids who are not afraid of heights can definitely do this trail. I recommend 1 adult per every child in the group. The views are rewarding and you can have a picnic once you...
Read moreA nice fun hike in a beautifully maintained area. Note that if you are not a hotel guest you will be parking at 1000 Mountain Rest Rd, New Paltz, NY and will need to walk about 40 min to reach the trailhead (which is a little crazy considering the hike itself is only 45 min long). That being said Mohonk sends detailed tips on what to wear and bring like good hiking shoes (the rocks are more slippery than they look) and the trail is very clearly marked. There is a lot of non-vertical scrambling and a few ladders. You will be squeezing in some rock crevices so do not bring big backpacks. We came at 930 on a Saturday morning and avoided most of the crowds so it only took 1 hr to get to the top with some stops for pictures. The town of New Paltz is also pretty cute and looks...
