This is the trailhead for the Jackrabbit Trail running from the Whiteface Club to Saranac Lake. There is ample roadside parking here and the trail is well marked. The path gently climbs up to the saddle between McKenzie Mountain and Haystack, passing the junction for trails to both those peaks. The descent on the east (Saranac Lake) side of the saddle is often steep and challenging on skis. There is a road crossing at McKenzie Pond Road at the 5.5 mile point.

Great trail! I would recommend taking this trail If you want to save about 3 miles from the popular route off 86. This trail to Haystack is very easy compared to the long way. Took less than an hour from the intersection. FYI there is no marker at the summit of Haystack. McKenzie has a sign on a tree at the summit. Took us 9hrs to do both with good size breaks, taking our time. Great hike!

Fantastic ski trail! Google jackrabbit trail and read about the amazing man who created this multi section ski trail! This is one of my favorite sections. Please wear the proper gear so it can remain a ski trail. If you're not skiing wear snowshoes in the winter months. It keeps the trail safer for everyone, foot holes freeze and create dangerous conditions for everyone after you.

hiked to haystack to McKenzie mountain. haystack was nice but i really didn't care for McKenzie...its just straight up and climbing, going around boulders and tree roots..not much of a view on top..some spots but pretty much the top is all tree covered and the hike down us just as hard as the hike up. this mountain is in my opinion more for experience or really experience hikers who climb fast and are like spider monkey's... would not recommend this trail to new beginners or family with children. it's a pretty tough Terrain. if you do it bring plenty of water and snacks with energy and protein because you're gonna need it! I was burned out before I even got to the top and really got tired on the way down..try to stop a lot too! and go early! don't be stupid like me and go in the afternoon! i didn't get back to my car until 830pm the hike out is very very long! seems like it will never end!... pretty sure there is tons of posion ivy on these trails so try your best to avoid them! good luck! i will never do this...

Street parking, then cross the street and the trail is right there. Street is a normal, paved one, often plowed. The snowbanks can get a bit high for street parking, but it doesn't stop most people. The trail requires xc skis or snowshoes but lots of people wear spikes when it's really packed down. The jackrabbit is pretty long, but this is well traveled as an easy way to summit haystack...
