Nice little hike. We climbed up via the Short Trail, which begins climbing almost immediately after the registry box. We found the trail to be typical of Adirondack mountain hikes- lots of roots and varying sizes of rocks to scramble over. While this is much easier than a 46er, it still requires a moderate amount of fitness. The short trail is well marked, so navigating to the summit is rather easy. We made it to the summit in about 45 minutes, as we took time to stop and enjoy the rewarding views that the trail provides towards the top. The summit is sort of an expansive rock ledge, flat, giving room to sit and rest and have a snack while taking in the views. On the way down, we followed the Long Trail, which was less steep, but a little bit longer than the Short Trail. We decided not to follow the Rock Garden Trail once we reached the junction between the two paths. In conclusion, this was a great little trail, one that can be completed in a little over a couple hours. I would recommend this one for families with young children, hikers without time to go for a 46er, and anyone seeking a fun way to get a moderately strenuous workout. This hike also offers 46er type views without the...

This is undoubtedly the perfect hike, as my dad and I like to say. Great for any age and any experience level (although the top part in particular has a tiny bit of a ‘climb’ climb, it’s still considered a fairly easy hike.) Great for families, dogs, beginners and intermediates alike. First mountain I climbed solo as a young teen and given the proximity to the Lodge and campground below, I felt safe on my own. Fairly short hike, 30-45mins going up. Fantastic view of Heart Lake from the top. Two different trails you can take, one being more direct and more popular (recommended) and the other being slightly longer and ‘less steep’ (I don’t recall it actually being less steep but it’s been a while!) This is one of those hikes that has it all- there’s a beautiful stream you follow up, rock staircases, logs you walk over (towards the top gets quite muddy, especially if it just rained), flat parts through the woods, and bits of climbing here and there. 100% recommended, especially if you’re looking for something fun that won’t take too long and has a fulfilling view at the end.

Be prepared for the top to get crowded during the day, especially in the summer. It’s a popular hike...

It is not an easy hike as others claim. Not good for small children or people who might have balance problems or heart conditions. One has to climb over the boulders many times. Couple of times I have to check google map( no service) offline if I am on still right path as seems like such a popular hike would be better marked. Signs for the trail are very poor. We took the short one up and long one down with an Australian cattle dog. The dog did not complain but there were unhappy crying, young kids on the trail. There were more people on long trail than shorter one. Overall, it is a good hike for some cardio workout. Parking is $18 dollars if you can find a spot. Otherwise you have to park on the roadside for quite a distance away to...

A relatively short, but steep hike…well worth the views! The “short” trail is just under a mile and definitely filled with rock scrambles and some steep stairs near the peak. It definitely is a moderate hike because it’s not long and there’s some breaks between elevation jumps. A little tricky coming down, we did the long trail down and it’s still very steep in spots with a lot of rock scrambles and roots. The view is incredible, peaceful, and expansive. The hike took us about 45 mins up the short side (with some short breaks) and about 45 mins down the long side with NO breaks. My watch measured 1.09 up and 1.33 down to and from the main path by the lake.

Great short hike with fantastic views of the area. The pictures are cool, but obviously nothing beats the real thing! As others have mentioned, it is well marked and maintained, with two trails that lead to the top. Short is steep, long is a bit more gradual. Great hike for first timers, adventurous young ones, pets, summit beverages, you name it! Parking can be challenging depending on time of day. If you plan to hike from this base area, get there very early in the day. Or figure out another place to park--if you know you know!
